En 1961, il compl\u00e8te sa formation aupr\u00e8s de l\u2019affichiste Henryk Tomaszewski (Varsovie, 1914-2005) qui l\u2019accueille dans son atelier aux Beaux-arts de Varsovie jusqu&rsquo;en 1962. De retour en France, Quarez devient directeur artistique \u00e0 l\u2019agence SNIP, l&rsquo;agence de publicit\u00e9 de Prouvost, Laini\u00e8res de Roubaix, de 1964 \u00e0 1966. C\u2019est l\u00e0 qu\u2019est rest\u00e9 son atelier. En hommage \u00e0 sa ville, un remarquable <em>Saint Denis<\/em> (ill.3) peint en 1999, peut-\u00eatre inspir\u00e9 de la statue m\u00e9di\u00e9vale de ce saint, conserv\u00e9e au mus\u00e9e de la ville\u2026 L\u2019\u0153uvre est empreinte de s\u00e9rieux malgr\u00e9 une fa\u00e7on bien personnelle de rendre un \u00e9pisode tragique, celui de la d\u00e9capitation, restitu\u00e9 avec une \u00e9nergie polychrome quasi expressionniste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quelles sont les couleurs de Michel Quarez\u00a0? \u00ab\u00a0Il emploie les pigments les plus forts et les plus chers\u00a0\u00bb\u2026 lit-on dans le catalogue qui lui est consacr\u00e9 pour son exposition \u00e0 la biblioth\u00e8que Forney. Ce qui se v\u00e9rifie dans l\u2019atelier de Saint Denis o\u00f9 sont encore conserv\u00e9es les bo\u00eetes de couleurs que l\u2019artiste n\u2019a pas utilis\u00e9es\u2026 Lefranc et sa marque Flashe couleur mate opaque, Decocryl couleur jaune citron, \u00ab\u00a0craint le gel\u00a0\u00bb pour des couleur rouge ou jaune citron\u2026 Que l\u2019on ne s\u2019y trompe pas, ces couleurs fortes, puissantes induisent un sentiment de bien-\u00eatre, voire de gaiet\u00e9 chez le spectateur qui les verra, une fois celles-ci devenues des \u00e9l\u00e9ments d\u2019une \u0153uvre. Ce n\u2019est pas pour autant que les peintures et affiches ainsi produites traduisent un sentiment de joie intense chez l\u2019artiste. Vatar<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UN ACTIVISME OUVERT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michel Quarez part pour New-York o\u00f9 il cr\u00e9e une bande dessin\u00e9e intitul\u00e9e <em>Mode Love<\/em>. \u00c0 New York, il d\u00e9couvre le travail d\u2019Andy Warhol\u00a0et, de retour en France, participe au journal politique\u00a0<em>Action<\/em>\u00a0n\u00e9 en\u00a0Mai 68, journal pour lequel il r\u00e9alise quelques affiches traduisant les mots d\u2019ordre et pr\u00e9occupations de cette p\u00e9riode. Cet engagement, il le partage alors intens\u00e9ment avec d\u2019autres amis et artistes (ill.6). Si l\u2019on se penche sur ses confr\u00e8res avec lesquels il y aurait des atomes crochus, outre une fascination pour l\u2019esth\u00e9tique de Savignac, d\u2019autres pr\u00e9sences sont fortes, tels Arroyo, Combas, Mosner, Di Rosa, Monory, S\u00e9gui, Klasen, Chambas, Pignon-Ernest, Djamel Tatah, Loustal et Warhol, des noms qu\u2019il \u00e9voque volontiers. Des artistes avec lesquels il participe \u00e0 diff\u00e9rentes manifestations. De m\u00eame, des artistes s\u00e9rigraphes comme Olivier Allemane ont \u00e9t\u00e9 sensibles \u00e0 cette polychromie intense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LES CAHIERS LEONARD<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au fil de sa carri\u00e8re, plac\u00e9e sous des hasards heureux, en tout premier lieu le fait d\u2019avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 accept\u00e9 par sa famille, pr\u00e9sente pour le soutien financier des \u00e9tudes, autant que boost\u00e9e par des relations amicales et professionnelles, notamment acquises durant la formation technique que veut son p\u00e8re pour accompagner un cursus aux Beaux-arts, Michel Quarez sait naviguer dans le monde concurrentiel de la commande d\u2019\u0153uvre et de cr\u00e9ation. Il sait tout autant \u00eatre disponible pour des manifestations diverses. L\u2019appui de sa commune et l\u2019engagement social facilitent encore une insertion qui fait de cet affichiste un artiste \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re. Sa ma\u00eetrise des applications technique et logicielle est assum\u00e9e et devient une aide pour g\u00e9rer sa documentation. Ainsi, les cahiers L\u00e9onard (ill. 11 \u00e0 16), plus d\u2019une centaine, tenus entre les ann\u00e9es 1990 \u00e0 2000, forment un ensemble qui est autant un point constant sur la cr\u00e9ation de l\u2019artiste, comme ce dernier y consigne des motifs qu\u2019il dessine au feutre ou sur transparent, pouvant ainsi les reprendre lors d\u2019une commande qu\u2019il aime g\u00e9rer en direct avec le commanditaire en reprenant ses th\u00e8mes privil\u00e9gi\u00e9s pour traduire ses id\u00e9es. En toute logique, Quarez int\u00e8grera Grapus, un groupement de graphistes revendiquant le statut d\u2019auteur, mais son ind\u00e9pendance d&rsquo;esprit prendra le dessus et cette parenth\u00e8se n&rsquo;aura dur\u00e9 qu&rsquo;un an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 1987, avec son affiche <em>le march\u00e9 aux fleurs<\/em> de Gennevilliers (ill.7), Il gagne la m\u00e9daille d&rsquo;or \u00e0 Toyama (Japon), et re\u00e7oit le Grand Prix National des Arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cette pr\u00e9sence affirm\u00e9e de Michel Quarez cr\u00e9ateur d\u2019affiches est rappel\u00e9e dans le catalogue de l\u2019exposition de la biblioth\u00e8que Forney\u00a0: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Michel Quarez\u00a0occupe une place originale dans le paysage actuel de l\u2019affiche, car il est l\u2019un des derniers repr\u00e9sentants d\u2019un <em>genre<\/em> presque disparu : l\u2019affichiste v\u00e9ritable. La conception de son art, exigeante, ne s\u2019est jamais accommod\u00e9e de l\u2019interm\u00e9diaire des agences de publicit\u00e9 : convaincu que l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 pratique d\u2019une affiche est ins\u00e9parable de sa valeur plastique, Michel Quarez veut avoir directement affaire \u00e0 l\u2019annonceur. Il traite ses sujets par grandes masses de couleurs satur\u00e9es et cherche \u00e0 provoquer un choc visuel maximum, effet que renforce l\u2019emploi fr\u00e9quent d\u2019encres fluorescentes. Le d\u00e9tail superflu est banni. La simplicit\u00e9 de ses images fait songer \u00e0 un art primitif et n\u2019est pas sans \u00e9voquer la signalisation routi\u00e8re. Ici, je suis dans mon jus, avec des gens qui s\u2019attachent \u00e0 regarder mon travail\u00a0\u00bb dit alors l\u2019artiste.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UN ART URBAIN AU SERVICE DU C\u0152UR ET DE L\u2019ENGAGEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cette pr\u00e9sence de Michel Quarez dans les espaces urbains est tr\u00e8s forte, un style reconnaissable entre tous attire l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat amus\u00e9, voire interloqu\u00e9, d\u2019un public large. Sa cr\u00e9ation recourt \u00e0 un trac\u00e9 soutenu, il appr\u00e9cie les aplats \u00ab\u00a0francs et enjou\u00e9s, qui apportent le soleil par tous les temps, absolument joyeux, jusqu\u2019\u00e0, parfois, la f\u00e9rocit\u00e9, cette id\u00e9e de la f\u00eate jamais mi\u00e8vre mais au contraire pleine de s\u00e8ve, de cris, de vie \u00a0\u00bb, \u00a0utilisant de forts cernes et contours, comme cela se voit sur des \u00e9tudes multiples et monochromes qui d\u00e9terminent des th\u00e8mes progressivement d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s et aboutissant \u00e0 des polychromies \u00e9clatantes et contrast\u00e9es. Il est vrai que sa sensibilit\u00e9 a \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s influenc\u00e9 par diff\u00e9rents artistes, notamment le cr\u00e9ateur d\u2019affiches Raymond Savignac (Paris, 1907-2002, Trouville-sur-Mer)\u00a0mais aussi par l\u2019\u0153uvre multiple d\u2019artistes comme Henri Matisse ou Pablo Picasso, autant peintres que dessinateurs ou pr\u00e9sents dans des domaines aussi larges que l\u2019estampe, la c\u00e9ramique, centre d\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat qui ont valu des \u0153uvres de commande \u00e0 ce cr\u00e9ateur r\u00e9solument original.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le travail de Michel Quarez se caract\u00e9rise souvent par l&#8217;emploi de grandes formes tr\u00e8s color\u00e9es, sans contour, \u00ab\u00a0hors mode, sans go\u00fbt pour l&rsquo;imitation qui met tant d&rsquo;unit\u00e9 dans les go\u00fbts d&rsquo;une g\u00e9n\u00e9ration.
