L\u2019entrevue semble solennelle, traduite dans un style qui renvoie \u00e0 l\u2019influence de la peinture orientaliste au 19<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle. De l\u2019avis d\u2019artisans restaurateurs de tableaux auxquels la peinture \u00e0 l\u2019huile a \u00e9t\u00e9 montr\u00e9e, cette \u0153uvre daterait de la toute fin du 19<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle ou du d\u00e9but du 20<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle. Le d\u00e9licat probl\u00e8me de sa signification s\u2019est pos\u00e9 et se pose encore en raison du contexte historique et stylistique qui s\u2019attache \u00e0 cette \u0153uvre \u00e0 la fois t\u00e9moignage sociologique et esth\u00e9tique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le traitement du sujet renvoie assez imm\u00e9diatement \u00e0 ce que l\u2019on appelle <em>la peinture orientaliste<\/em>, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire un type d\u2019\u0153uvre profond\u00e9ment li\u00e9e au\u00a0voyage. Ce voyage va nous mener \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper diff\u00e9rents aspects humains et techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LA&nbsp;PEINTURE ORIENTALISTE&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La&nbsp;peinture orientaliste&nbsp;est une&nbsp;peinture&nbsp;qui aborde des th\u00e8mes tournant autour de l\u2019Orient tel qu\u2019il appara\u00eet aux Occidentaux d\u00e8s la fin de la Renaissance, lorsque ces derniers vont \u00e0 la conqu\u00eate du monde, du Nouveau Monde. D\u2019embl\u00e9e, le vrai et l\u2019imaginaire sont en pr\u00e9sence. &nbsp;Il ne s&rsquo;agit donc pas seulement d&rsquo;un style, d&rsquo;un&nbsp;mouvement&nbsp;ou d&rsquo;une \u00e9cole de peinture particulier. L&rsquo;int\u00e9r\u00eat de l&rsquo;Occident&nbsp;pour l&rsquo;orientalisme est apparu intens\u00e9ment durant le 18<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, mais c&rsquo;est surtout au si\u00e8cle suivant, au 19e si\u00e8cle,&nbsp;que l&rsquo;attrait pour les th\u00e8mes orientaux va conna\u00eetre son apog\u00e9e. En revanche, au 20<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle&nbsp;les th\u00e8mes orientalistes vont peu \u00e0 peu dispara\u00eetre et d&rsquo;une certaine mani\u00e8re on peut consid\u00e9rer que l&rsquo;ind\u00e9pendance de l&rsquo;Alg\u00e9rie&nbsp;en&nbsp;1962&nbsp;a marqu\u00e9 la fin de la peinture orientaliste en France. L\u2019imaginaire a \u00e9t\u00e9 vid\u00e9 d\u2019un fort contenu initial pour \u00e9voluer vers une signification symbolique autre, plus r\u00e9aliste, davantage politique. On est alors face \u00e0 une peinture autre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour pr\u00e9ciser encore ce qu\u2019est la peinture orientaliste, au 19<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, on trouve surtout des sc\u00e8nes de&nbsp;harem, des sc\u00e8nes de chasses et de combat ou bien encore des repr\u00e9sentations de paysages typiques, comme les&nbsp;d\u00e9serts, les&nbsp;oasis&nbsp;ou les villes orientales, des th\u00e8mes caract\u00e9ristiques des r\u00e9gions travers\u00e9es par les Occidentaux lors de leur conqu\u00eate de ce Nouveau Monde. Au si\u00e8cle suivant, ces th\u00e8mes vont peu \u00e0 peu tomber en d\u00e9su\u00e9tude au profit d&rsquo;une peinture&nbsp;ethnographique&nbsp;plus pr\u00e9cise et moins id\u00e9alis\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D&rsquo;un point de vue technique, la peinture orientaliste est marqu\u00e9e par une utilisation de&nbsp;couleurs&nbsp;aux tons chauds, privil\u00e9giant des teintes plus rouges, jaunes ou brunes. La lumi\u00e8re est chaude, les&nbsp;contrastes&nbsp;sont accentu\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>QUELQUES ARTISTES EMBLEMATIQUES DE LA PEINTURE ORIENTALISTE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Une longue tradition d\u2019observation de l\u2019Orient vu par les peintres occidentaux et notamment fran\u00e7ais au 19<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle a permis de constituer des collections prestigieuses. Le plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bre de ces peintres novateurs est Eug\u00e8ne Delacroix (1798-1863). En&nbsp;1832, Eug\u00e8ne Delacroix fait un unique voyage au Maroc et en Alg\u00e9rie. \u00c0 Alger, il est autoris\u00e9 \u00e0 visiter le harem d\u2019un corsaire turc, une r\u00e9v\u00e9lation qui lui inspire <em>Femmes d\u2019Alger dans leur appartement<\/em>, chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre qu\u2019il expose au Salon de 1834. L\u2019\u0153uvre est conserv\u00e9e actuellement au mus\u00e9e du Louvre. Il a eu de nombreux suiveurs, dont Th\u00e9odore Chass\u00e9riau (1819-1856), admirateur d&rsquo;Eug\u00e8ne Delacroix, qui se sent lui aussi attir\u00e9 par l\u2019Orient. Sur l\u2019invitation du calife de&nbsp;Constantine, Ali Ben Ahmed, Chass\u00e9riau se rend en&nbsp;Alg\u00e9rie&nbsp;en&nbsp;1846. Ses sc\u00e8nes de combats de cavaliers arabes et ses sc\u00e8nes de vie des femmes \u00e0 Alger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans ce contexte particulier, nous revenons \u00e0 cette <em>Rencontre<\/em> entre deux hommes entour\u00e9s de leurs subordonn\u00e9s. Otto Wegener. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PIERRE SAVORGNAN DE BRAZZA, UN CONQUERANT DE NOUVELLES TERRES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C\u00e9l\u00e8bre pour ses explorations en Afrique alors qu\u2019il est mandat\u00e9 par l\u2019Etat fran\u00e7ais, cet explorateur italien, naturalis\u00e9 fran\u00e7ais en 1874, \u00e9galement officier de marine, est connu pour ses missions en Afrique centrale ainsi que pour son approche non-violente de l\u2019humain. Ses trois exp\u00e9ditions ont lieu successivement en 1875-1878, il remonte alors les sources du fleuve Ogou\u00e9, au Gabon, puis en 1879-1882 son efficacit\u00e9 de conqu\u00e9rant lui vaut de fonder la ville de Brazzaville. Durant sa troisi\u00e8me exp\u00e9dition, en 1879, il part d\u2019Europe et atteint le fleuve Congo en 1880, il obtient une concession pour la France. Il passe donc des ann\u00e9es au Congo o\u00f9 il se rend avec un m\u00e9decin et un naturaliste. Il aura l\u2019occasion de se rendre en Alg\u00e9rie et d\u2019y s\u00e9journer pour des raisons diverses, une premi\u00e8re fois apr\u00e8s avoir obtenu son grade d\u2019enseigne de vaisseau, vers 1872, et, une deuxi\u00e8me fois il se retire en 1898 dans la ville d\u2019Alger afin de fuir des d\u00e9sagr\u00e9ments professionnels. Le 5 avril 1905, Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza entame \u00e0 Marseille son sixi\u00e8me voyage au Congo. Ce sera la \u00ab\u00a0mission sans retour\u00a0\u00bb. Il tombe malade et tente de regagner la France. En chemin, il meurt de dysentrie le 14 septembre 1905 \u00e0 6 heures \u00e0 Dakar. Il est ensuite inhum\u00e9 \u00e0 Alger. Selon d\u2019autres sources, il aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 empoisonn\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Des photos de lui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 prises par les fr\u00e8res Giuseppe et Luigi Vianelli, photographes \u00e0 Venise en 1870. Son fr\u00e8re Jacques Savorgnan de Brazza (1859-1888, Rome), \u00e9galement explorateur, a aussi pris de nombreuses photos (ill. 3). Il accompagne son fr\u00e8re comme attach\u00e9 naturaliste \u00e0 la&nbsp;<em>Mission de l&rsquo;Ouest africain<\/em>&nbsp;en&nbsp;janvier 1883. Il rejoint le&nbsp;Congo&nbsp;avec le naturaliste italien&nbsp;Attilio Pecile&nbsp;en&nbsp;f\u00e9vrier 1883&nbsp;et bien que ne pouvant effectuer tous les travaux souhait\u00e9s par manque de personnel dans la mission, il fait plusieurs reconnaissances sur l&rsquo;Ogoou\u00e9&nbsp;et la&nbsp;Sangha. R\u00e9interpr\u00e9t\u00e9es, ces photos ont \u00e9t\u00e9 traduites en gravures utilis\u00e9es dans les revues de l\u2019\u00e9poque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>LA RENCONTRE<\/em><\/strong><strong>, UNE \u0152UVRE MOINS MYSTERIEUSE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019attribution de cette peinture \u00e0 l\u2019huile reste un \u00e9l\u00e9ment complexe. La sc\u00e8ne assume un caract\u00e8re d\u2019exemplarit\u00e9 fort qui renvoie \u00e0 la place donn\u00e9e assez vite \u00e0 Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza par les institutions : la Troisi\u00e8me R\u00e9publique cherche en effet ses nouveaux h\u00e9ros. Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, officier de marine aristocrate, \u00e9l\u00e9gant, h\u00e9ro\u00efque, r\u00e9volt\u00e9 par l\u2019esclavagisme, ap\u00f4tre de la paix, et surtout d\u00e9sint\u00e9ress\u00e9, a un profil parfait \u00e0 tous ces \u00e9gards. Il est envisag\u00e9 de l&rsquo;inhumer au&nbsp;Panth\u00e9on&nbsp;pour r\u00e9cup\u00e9rer sa gloire intacte. Sa veuve refuse l\u2019honneur, le corps est alors inhum\u00e9 au&nbsp;P\u00e8re-Lachaise, puis d\u00e9plac\u00e9, trois ans plus tard, \u00e0 Alger, o\u00f9 vivent sa veuve et ses enfants. Sur sa tombe, l\u2019\u00e9pitaphe, r\u00e9dig\u00e9e par son ami&nbsp;Charles de Chavannes, indique que&nbsp;\u00ab&nbsp;Sa m\u00e9moire est pure de sang humain. Il succomba le 14 septembre 1905 au cours d\u2019une derni\u00e8re mission entreprise pour sauvegarder les droits des indig\u00e8nes et l\u2019honneur de la Nation&nbsp;\u00bb. Il est ainsi assimil\u00e9 \u00e0 des \u00eatres d\u2019exception tel que l\u2019explorateur David Livingstone (1813-1873).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les fonds d\u2019archives n\u2019ont pas encore fait l\u2019objet de recherches suffisantes permettant de comprendre la r\u00e9cup\u00e9ration iconographique des \u0153uvres relatives \u00e0 cet explorateur. La peinture orientaliste, nous l\u2019avons vu plus haut, est devenue acad\u00e9mique, le faste s\u2019oriente vers une exemplarit\u00e9 \u00e0 fond de vertu sociale. Les photographies de Jacques Savorgnan de Brazza, le naturaliste, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 in\u00e9galement exploit\u00e9es par les cr\u00e9ateurs de l\u2019\u00e9poque. Elles ont d\u00fb servir d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ments pertinents pour la production de gravures qui accompagnaient les articles parus dans les revues d\u2019information et de voyages de l\u2019\u00e9poque comme <em>Le Tour du monde, nouveau journal des voyages<\/em>, un&nbsp;hebdomadaire&nbsp;fran\u00e7ais publi\u00e9 \u00e0 partir de janvier&nbsp;1860. Une deuxi\u00e8me s\u00e9rie est inaugur\u00e9e en 1895 sous le titre&nbsp;<em>Le Tour du monde, journal des voyages et des voyageurs.<\/em>&nbsp;Le contenu de cette revue encourage l\u2019expansionnisme europ\u00e9en par des&nbsp;r\u00e9cits de voyage&nbsp;de haute qualit\u00e9 litt\u00e9raire mis en images par quelques-uns des plus remarquables illustrateurs et xylographes de leur \u00e9poque. Un autre hebdomadaire, concurrent du pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent, diffuse force images sur les \u00e9v\u00e9nements du bout du monde de l\u2019\u00e9poque&nbsp;: Le&nbsp;<em>Journal des voyages et des aventures de terre et de mer<\/em>, qui para\u00eet d\u00e8s juillet&nbsp;1877&nbsp;et jusqu\u2019en 1949, ann\u00e9e de sa disparition<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au vu des sources et \u0153uvres consult\u00e9es, il semble prudent d\u2019attribuer \u00e0 Giulio Rosati&nbsp;(1858-1917, Rome) peintre orientaliste&nbsp;italien&nbsp;de la fin du 19e&nbsp;et du d\u00e9but du 20e si\u00e8cle&nbsp;repr\u00e9sentatif du&nbsp;style acad\u00e9mique, cette <em>Rencontre<\/em>, embl\u00e9matique d\u2019un tournant important de la peinture orientaliste. L&rsquo;orientalisme devient son th\u00e8me de pr\u00e9dilection et en particulier le&nbsp;Maghreb, dont il peint d&rsquo;une mani\u00e8re tr\u00e8s color\u00e9e des personnages que l&rsquo;on croirait tir\u00e9s de r\u00e9cits d&rsquo;aventure. Il n&rsquo;est d&rsquo;ailleurs pas certain qu&rsquo;il ait voyag\u00e9 en&nbsp;Afrique du Nord&nbsp;et sa documentation provient surtout des photographies, des revues et des objets que l&rsquo;on trouvait alors \u00e0&nbsp;Rome, o\u00f9 il est install\u00e9. Il utilise la peinture \u00e0 l&rsquo;huile, mais davantage comme l&rsquo;aquarelle&nbsp;dont il ma\u00eetrise particuli\u00e8rement bien la technique. Il est l&rsquo;un des peintres orientalistes les plus prolifiques de la fin du 19e&nbsp;et du d\u00e9but du 20e si\u00e8cle. Sous son inspiration, Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza devient, lors de son passage \u00e0 Alger, ville ou il rencontre les autorit\u00e9s administratives, le repr\u00e9sentant d\u2019un pays qui \u0153uvre pour le bonheur de l\u2019humanit\u00e9.
