Portrait de&nbsp;Johan Sadeler&nbsp;(1550-1600) grav\u00e9 par Conraed Waumans. Le texte grav\u00e9 sous ce portrait \u00e0 mi-buste, rappelle les talents du personnage d\u00e9crit et la c\u00e9l\u00e9brit\u00e9 acquise avec ses travaux. Le portrait grav\u00e9 par Conraed Waumans, un frontispice, est tir\u00e9 du volume <em>Image de divers hommes d&rsquo;esprit sublime, qui par leur art et science devraient vivre \u00e9ternellement et desquels la louange et renomm\u00e9e faict estonner le monde<\/em>, Anvers&nbsp;: J. Meyssens, 1649.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Comme le rappellent nombre de notices biographiques, plus ou moins \u00e9quivalentes ou compl\u00e9mentaires, ou tout simplement le r\u00e9sum\u00e9 biographique grav\u00e9 en taille douce qui est sous le portrait grav\u00e9 par Conraed Waumans, Sadeler&nbsp;est un&nbsp;graveur&nbsp;illustrateur&nbsp;flamand, le premier d&rsquo;une c\u00e9l\u00e8bre&nbsp;famille de graveurs. Il na\u00eet \u00e0&nbsp;Bruxelles&nbsp;en 1550, et, \u00e0 l\u2019issue de sa formation \u00e0 Anvers, est re\u00e7u ma\u00eetre en taille-douce \u00e0 la guilde Saint-Luc de cette m\u00eame ville en 1572. Il travaille d&rsquo;abord pour l&rsquo;\u00e9diteur, imprimeur et relieur&nbsp;Christophe Plantin (1520, Saint Avertin-1589, Anvers), grave diff\u00e9rentes planches d&rsquo;apr\u00e8s des dessins de&nbsp;Crispin van den Broeck,&nbsp;Michiel Coxcie,&nbsp;Dirck Barendsz&nbsp;et&nbsp;Maarten de Vos (1532-1603). Il se rend en Allemagne \u00e0 la fin des ann\u00e9es 1570, en particulier \u00e0 Cologne en 1580. En 1581 il obtient le privil\u00e8ge d&rsquo;\u00e9diter ses gravures de l&#8217;empereur Rodolphe II. Apr\u00e8s un court s\u00e9jour \u00e0 Mayence, il s&rsquo;installe \u00e0 Francfort-sur-le-Main avec son fr\u00e8re&nbsp;Rapha\u00ebl. Il y rencontre notamment&nbsp;Crispin de Passe&nbsp;et&nbsp;Th\u00e9odore de Bry. En 1588, Il est invit\u00e9 \u00e0 la cour de Munich par Guillaume V. Il s&rsquo;illustre pendant son s\u00e9jour d&rsquo;une dizaine d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es par une puissance de travail exceptionnelle et une ex\u00e9cution magistrale soulign\u00e9e par&nbsp;Joachim von Sandrart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vers la fin du si\u00e8cle il part pour l&rsquo;Italie, et visite notamment Florence, V\u00e9rone, Rome et Venise o\u00f9 il s&rsquo;installe. Il y travaille de 1596 jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 sa mort qui intervient en&nbsp;ao\u00fbt 1600. Son testament contient un relev\u00e9 des cuivres qu&rsquo;il avait en commun avec son fr\u00e8re&nbsp;Rapha\u00ebl&nbsp;dont les quatre c\u00e9l\u00e8bres s\u00e9ries de planches sur les ermites&nbsp;:&nbsp;<em>Sylvae Sacrae<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Solitudo Sive Vitae Patrum Eremicolarum<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Trophaeum vitae solitariae<\/em>&nbsp;et&nbsp;<em>Solitudo sive vitae foeminarum anachoritarum<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Son \u0153uvre extr\u00eamement prolifique a parfois \u00e9t\u00e9 copi\u00e9e, par exemple par&nbsp;Thomas de Leu, Jan van Londerseel, ou&nbsp;Philippe Thomassin, le premier ma\u00eetre de&nbsp;Jacques Callot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans le catalogue de son \u0153uvre publi\u00e9 en 1854, Charles Le Blanc d\u00e9nombre 185 estampes. Plus d&rsquo;un si\u00e8cle plus tard, le catalogue Hollstein publi\u00e9 en 1980, en compte 622.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les \u0153uvres de Jan Sadeler sont bien repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es dans les collections publiques et priv\u00e9es fran\u00e7aises, europ\u00e9ennes et outre-Manche. Sadeler a aussi laiss\u00e9 des dessins, dont un dans les fonds des Beaux-Arts de Paris, <em>Amour assis tenant une tablette&nbsp;<\/em>(plume, encre brune et lavis d&rsquo;encre de Chine, H. 0,104&nbsp;; L. 0,86 m). La pi\u00e8ce est sign\u00e9e et dat\u00e9e de sa main, et a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9e lors de son s\u00e9jour \u00e0&nbsp;Munich, avant son d\u00e9part pour l&rsquo;Italie. Elle fait partie du petit corpus de dessins connus de l&rsquo;artiste, avec le&nbsp;<em>Portrait de&nbsp;Joris Hoefnagel&nbsp;<\/em>(Kunsthalle, Br\u00eame), et la&nbsp;<em>Fortune sur un globe terrestre<\/em>&nbsp;(Albertina, Vienne).
