Pan Y\u00fcliang (ill. 4 et 5)) est objet d\u2019effarement, la vie silencieuse et marginale de Tang Haiwen (ill.6) continue d\u2019\u00eatre pass\u00e9e sous silence. Ainsi, Puyi abdique et laisse la place aux nationalistes du Kuomintang (\u56fd\u6c11\u515a)dont le leader, Sun Yat-sen (\u5b59\u4e2d\u5c71), est \u00e9lu pr\u00e9sident provisoire. Il proclame \u00e0&nbsp;Nankin&nbsp;la R\u00e9publique de Chine en 1912. &nbsp;Selon les historiens, l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e 1913 marque le d\u00e9but des relations diplomatiques et \u00e9conomiques entre la France et la Chine. En 1913, le gouvernement fran\u00e7ais de la&nbsp;Troisi\u00e8me R\u00e9publique&nbsp;reconna\u00eet la&nbsp;r\u00e9publique de Chine. Cet acte, effectu\u00e9 du c\u00f4t\u00e9 fran\u00e7ais par les diplomates&nbsp;Alexandre-Robert Conty&nbsp;et&nbsp;Philippe Berthelot voit, la m\u00eame ann\u00e9e la cr\u00e9ation de la&nbsp;Banque industrielle de Chine&nbsp;(BIC) par le financier&nbsp;Andr\u00e9 Berthelot. C&rsquo;est une banque franco-chinoise n\u00e9e avec le soutien du Minist\u00e8re des Affaires Etrang\u00e8res fran\u00e7ais et du gouvernement r\u00e9publicain chinois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u25aa Emigration fin de si\u00e8cle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans les faits, \u00e0 partir de 1900, une \u00e9migration chinoise de&nbsp;Wenzhou&nbsp;vient en France m\u00e9tropolitaine vivre \u00e0 Paris ou&nbsp;\u00e0 Dieppe. Avec la&nbsp;Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale, quelque 35&nbsp;000&nbsp;Chinois &#8211; non-combattants &#8211; participent \u00e0 l&rsquo;effort de guerre avec les Fran\u00e7ais, le triple du c\u00f4t\u00e9 anglais.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sous l&rsquo;impulsion de&nbsp;Li Shizeng\u674e\u77f3\u66fe (1881, P\u00e9kin-1973, Taipei)<strong>, <\/strong><strong>activiste politique, membre du Parti nationaliste chinois et aussi s<\/strong>cientifique qui \u00e9tudie en France, o\u00f9, de 1903 \u00e0 1906, il suit les cours de l\u2019\u00c9cole pratique d\u2019agriculture de Montargis puis, en 1906, \u00e9tudie la biochimie \u00e0 l\u2019institut Pasteur, est mis en place le&nbsp;Mouvement Travail-\u00c9tudes&nbsp;en&nbsp;1919. Dans les trois premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es du programme, quelque 1&nbsp;500&nbsp;\u00e9tudiants chinois se rendent ainsi en France, originaires pour la plupart du Hunan et du Sichuan. Ceux-ci vont par la suite devenir des cadres du parti communiste chinois, puis du r\u00e9gime communiste chinois, comme&nbsp;Deng Xiaoping,&nbsp;Zhou Enlai,&nbsp;Chen Yi,&nbsp;Nie Rongzhen,&nbsp;Li Fuchun. Au total 4000 \u00e9tudiants passeront par&nbsp;Montargis&nbsp;o\u00f9 se trouve aujourd&rsquo;hui un mus\u00e9e qui retrace cette histoire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Par ailleurs, un premier congr\u00e8s du Parti communiste chinois, marquant la naissance de ce parti, a eu lieu en 1921 \u00e0 Shanghai. Plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment dans le quartier de Xintiandi. Ses deux fondateurs sont Chen Duxiu et Li Dazhao, deux intellectuels chinois qui ont jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le majeur dans le Mouvement du 4&nbsp;mai en 1919.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>II &#8211; DE LA PRESENCE DES ARTISTES CHINOIS EN FRANCE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lors de la mission Joffre en Extr\u00eame-Orient, du&nbsp;23 f\u00e9vrier&nbsp;au&nbsp;12 mars 1922, le mar\u00e9chal&nbsp;Joffre&nbsp;et sa d\u00e9l\u00e9gation font plusieurs escales dans les villes de Shenyang, P\u00e9kin, Tianjin et Shanghai. Le but de la mission est de remercier la participation de la Chine \u00e0 la guerre et d&rsquo;am\u00e9liorer durablement les relations sino-fran\u00e7aises. De nombreux artistes chinois viennent travailler \u00e0 Paris comme Wu Guanzhong, San Yu&nbsp;(ill.7),&nbsp;Chang Shuhong&nbsp;(ill. 8 et 9) \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9cole des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Mao Zedong proclame alors le 1er octobre 1949 la R\u00e9publique populaire de Chine\u4e2d\u534e\u4eba\u6c11\u5171\u548c\u56fd. Ce jour est ainsi devenu le jour de la f\u00eate nationale chinoise. Les politiques se succ\u00e8dent pour l\u2019ouverture et la reconnaissance du pays face \u00e0 l\u2019Occident&nbsp;: Grand Bon en avant&nbsp;\u5927\u8dc3\u8fdb&nbsp;(1958-1960), Grande r\u00e9volution culturelle prol\u00e9tarienne&nbsp;\u6587\u5316\u5927\u9769\u547d&nbsp;(1966-1976), arriv\u00e9e de Deng Xiaoping et r\u00e9forme d\u2019ouverture&nbsp;\u6539\u9769\u5f00\u653e&nbsp;(1978), entr\u00e9e de la Chine \u00e0 l\u2019Organisation mondiale du commerce le 11 d\u00e9cembre 2001. Les crit\u00e8res de s\u00e9lection et d\u2019appr\u00e9ciation des artistes par les collectionneurs chinois continuent de surprendre l\u2019Occident dont les crit\u00e8res restent autres \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>III &#8211; LA FRANCE, TERRE DES ARTS AUX HABITUDES CONSTANTES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La politique culturelle fran\u00e7aise se distingue par sa longue histoire, par une volont\u00e9 de rationaliser ce qui peut l\u2019\u00eatre assez difficilement, en termes de culture, ce concept pouvant susciter des risques comme l&rsquo;\u00e9mergence d&rsquo;une culture \u00e9tatique et conformiste. Il n\u2019emp\u00eache qu\u2019en p\u00e9riode faste, les actions ainsi induites oscillent entre d\u00e9termination a priori d&rsquo;une culture nationale et d\u00e9fense de la&nbsp;diversit\u00e9 culturelle permettant une ouverture qui devient la forte pr\u00e9sence de l&rsquo;\u00c9tat, et la continuit\u00e9 des institutions au fil des si\u00e8cles. \u00ab&nbsp;Ni la volont\u00e9 politique, ni les moyens financiers, ni l&rsquo;armature administrative &#8211; souligne Jacques Rigaud -, n&rsquo;atteignent un tel niveau dans aucun autre pays&nbsp;\u00bb. L\u2019Etat a t\u00f4t encourag\u00e9 cette tendance sp\u00e9cifique. Louis XIV en a \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u2019un des ardents repr\u00e9sentants. Avec Charles Louis Napol\u00e9on Bonaparte [1808, Paris \u2013 1873, Chislehurst&nbsp;(Royaume-Uni)], monarque&nbsp;et homme d&rsquo;\u00c9tat \u00e0 la fois l&rsquo;unique pr\u00e9sident de la&nbsp;Deuxi\u00e8me R\u00e9publique, le premier&nbsp;chef d&rsquo;\u00c9tat fran\u00e7ais&nbsp;\u00e9lu au&nbsp;suffrage universel masculin, le&nbsp;10 d\u00e9cembre 1848, le premier&nbsp;pr\u00e9sident de la R\u00e9publique fran\u00e7aise, et, apr\u00e8s la proclamation de l&rsquo;Empire&nbsp;le&nbsp;2 d\u00e9cembre 1852, le dernier&nbsp;monarque&nbsp;du pays sous le nom de&nbsp;Napol\u00e9on&nbsp;III,&nbsp;empereur des Fran\u00e7ais, les choses n\u2019ont pas chang\u00e9. Les missions en Asie continuent, et avec elles, des standards sur le go\u00fbt chinois perdurent, entre horrible et merveilleux. L\u2019accueil des cr\u00e9ateurs chinois, \u00e9crivains, calligraphes et artistes peintres va de pair avec le d\u00e9veloppement de la sinologie, dont les balbutiements, en parall\u00e8le \u00e0 un int\u00e9r\u00eat intellectuel sur la langue elle-m\u00eame se double d\u2019un d\u00e9veloppement commercial \u00e9vident. Il n\u2019en reste pas moins qu\u2019entre Est et Ouest, les attitudes conservatrices et prudentes des politiques culturelles ont g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9 des esth\u00e9tiques qui laissent fr\u00e9quemment place \u00e0 d\u2019heureuses surprises et d\u00e9couvertes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C\u2019est dans ce contexte r\u00e9glementaire que Zhang Hua d\u00e9cide de faire le voyage en Occident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>IV &#8211; ZHANG HUA. POUR UNE APPROCHE BIOGRAPHIQUE AUTRE &nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zhang Hua n\u2019est pas un inconnu des amateurs d\u2019art moderne, il est aussi appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 par les collectionneurs d\u2019art chinois, et ce, m\u00eame si sa biographie est tr\u00e8s incertaine. Comme le rappelle Sylvie Vervaet (ill. 52), marchande d\u2019art et sp\u00e9cialiste de l\u2019art moderne et contemporain qui a, depuis une dizaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la connaissance en achetant des \u0153uvres de ce cr\u00e9ateur \u00ab&nbsp;j\u2019ai pu avoir entre les mains une biographie sommaire de Zhang Hua communiqu\u00e9e par un proche de l\u2019artiste. Le document et l\u2019ami ayant disparu, depuis lors, ces quelques donn\u00e9es sont r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9es sans que l\u2019on en sache davantage sur ce peintre&nbsp;\u00bb. Une courte pr\u00e9sentation de ce m\u00eame peintre par Brigitte Camus corrobore les \u00e9l\u00e9ments connus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u2019apr\u00e8s les documents communiqu\u00e9s par Sylvie Vervaet, Zhang Hua se rend au Canada dans les ann\u00e9es 20, expose \u00e0 Vancouver, est en Europe vers 1935, \u00e0 Strasbourg en 1937, pour, ensuite, s\u2019installer \u00e0 Paris. Il r\u00e9side au Japon entre 1954 et 1956, exposant dans des galeries Kasuga et Ichibancho. Il est de retour \u00e0 Paris et s\u2019\u00e9teint pr\u00e8s de Lyon vers 1970.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cette singuli\u00e8re biographie n\u00e9cessitait de rappeler les contextes qui ont permis et permettent aux personnes de circuler entre Chine et France. Parall\u00e8lement, les contacts \u00e9tablis avec le mus\u00e9e historique de l\u2019amiti\u00e9 franco-chinoise de Montargis et l\u2019institut franco-chinois de Lyon ont permis de trouver quelques pr\u00e9cisions int\u00e9ressantes. L\u2019artiste chinois d\u00e9couvre, une fois dans ce <em>nouveau pays<\/em>, que les \u0153uvres g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9es sur le&nbsp;Vieux Continent&nbsp;restent des mod\u00e8les miroir du monde occidental durant les premi\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies du 20<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle. Une partie importante des \u0153uvres rejoignent les collections priv\u00e9es et les mus\u00e9es am\u00e9ricains, alors que les peintres am\u00e9ricains partent \u00e9tudier l&rsquo;art anglais, fran\u00e7ais, allemand ou italien. La&nbsp;Seconde Guerre mondiale va \u00eatre la cause d\u2019un tournant in\u00e9luctable&nbsp;: les \u00c9tats-Unis, premi\u00e8re puissance financi\u00e8re, et&nbsp;New York&nbsp;en particulier, deviennent un centre dynamique qui attire les artistes europ\u00e9ens m\u00eame si certains sont d\u00e9j\u00e0 parti vers ce nouveau monde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Les th\u00e8mes de la&nbsp;peinture&nbsp;am\u00e9ricaine ont suivi l&rsquo;histoire du pays&nbsp;et l&rsquo;\u00e9volution de sa soci\u00e9t\u00e9 : les portraits de l&rsquo;\u00e9lite coloniale durant les 17<sup>e<\/sup> et 18<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cles, les paysages et les gens du peuple au&nbsp;19<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, les progr\u00e8s techniques et la vie citadine, le r\u00e9alisme et le modernisme&nbsp;des ann\u00e9es 1900 et l\u2019abstraction des ann\u00e9es d&rsquo;apr\u00e8s-guerre. La Grande D\u00e9pression provoque un ch\u00f4mage massif parmi les artistes des ann\u00e9es 1930, tandis qu\u2019un volet culturel du New Deal mis en place au printemps de 1933 par le pr\u00e9sident&nbsp;Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945) doit aider les artistes en difficult\u00e9. Ainsi, la&nbsp;Public Work of Art Project&nbsp;donne du travail \u00e0 plusieurs milliers d&rsquo;artistes. Elle ne dure que cinq mois, tandis que la Works Projects Administration&nbsp;(WPA) initie en 1935 de nombreux projets dans le domaine des arts et de la culture. Cinq programmes du fameux Federal Project Number One sont mis en place. Pour les \u00e9crivains, les monuments historiques, les acteurs, les musiciens et pour les arts plastiques le Federal Art Project (FAP), la WPA permet ainsi la r\u00e9alisation de 1 566 peintures nouvelles, 17744 sculptures, 108099 peintures \u00e0 l\u2019huile et le d\u00e9veloppement de l&rsquo;enseignement artistique. Cette structure octroie des subventions quel que soit le sujet de l&rsquo;\u0153uvre. Durant cette p\u00e9riode de cr\u00e9ation libre qui se termine \u00e0 la fin du New Deal avec un bilan mitig\u00e9, l\u2019art se met au service du peuple. Si les artistes am\u00e9ricains tels Louise Nevelson (1899-1988), Diego Rivera (1886-1987), Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) et bien d\u2019autres ont \u00e9t\u00e9 soutenus par des fonds publics et ont acquis une reconnaissance nationale, \u2014 voire au cours du temps internationale \u2014 cette politique culturelle est interrompue par la Seconde Guerre mondiale&nbsp;et la mort du pr\u00e9sident Roosevelt. Malgr\u00e9 tout, ce vaste programme a favoris\u00e9 le sentiment communautaire chez les artistes am\u00e9ricains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les rencontres et les \u00e9changes entre les artistes de l&rsquo;abstraction qui se sont regroup\u00e9s en une association de promotion en 1936, les <em>American Abstract Artists<\/em> (AAA), revendiquent l&rsquo;ouverture des mus\u00e9es am\u00e9ricains aux artistes abstraits. Ils formeront le mouvement de l&rsquo;Expressionisme abstrait en concentrant l&rsquo;intensit\u00e9 \u00e9motionnelle des expressionnistes allemands et l&rsquo;esth\u00e9tique anti-figurative des \u00e9coles abstraites europ\u00e9ennes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u25aa 1947. Il n&#8217;emp\u00eache qu&rsquo;au sortir de la guerre, en 1947, il est encore n\u00e9cessaire pour les galeries new-yorkaises de faire exposer leurs artistes \u00e0 Paris, pour avoir un gage de qualit\u00e9 valid\u00e9 par de la publicit\u00e9 dans la presse am\u00e9ricaine \u00e0 leur retour. C&rsquo;est aussi \u00e0 partir de 1947 que les am\u00e9ricains prennent leur distance avec l&rsquo;Europe, alors que Paris ne doute pas de sa supr\u00e9matie artistique. 1947, est une date embl\u00e9matique, celle du premier dripping de Pollock, de l&rsquo;exposition promotionnelle <em>Forty American Moderns<\/em>, mais aussi une ann\u00e9e de grands \u00e9v\u00e9nements g\u00e9opolitiques qui voient les Etats-unis imposer leur puissance imp\u00e9riale au monde entier. A New-York, la tendance en 1948 est de convaincre le public que les \u0153uvres modernes new-yorkaises valent autant que les productions des avant-gardes europ\u00e9ennes. Une tendance reprise par les mus\u00e9es (MoMA) appuy\u00e9 par les artistes (Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko), les critiques (Cl\u00e9ment Greenberg, Harold Rosenberg), les galeries, les universitaires (Meyer Shapiro), et les marchands (Sidney Janis, Samuel Kootz). Les couleurs utilis\u00e9es par les peintres sont souvent le noir et le blanc en r\u00e9v\u00e9lateur des sombres p\u00e9riodes pass\u00e9es, suivra la recherche monochrome pour laisser place au d\u00e9veloppement de courants lib\u00e9rateurs tels l&rsquo;abstraction lyrique, le tachisme ou l&rsquo;art informel. Les repr\u00e9sentants&nbsp;de ces mouvements spectaculaires tels Hans Hartung (1904-1989) (ill. 44), Georges Mathieu (1921-2012) (ill. 41), privil\u00e9gient l\u2019art du geste en faisant de la spontan\u00e9it\u00e9 la qualit\u00e9 premi\u00e8re de l&rsquo;\u0153uvre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zhang Hua a \u00e9t\u00e9 sensible \u00e0 cet art gestuel qu&rsquo;il ma\u00eetrise mais exp\u00e9rimente selon les crit\u00e8res de la culture occidentale en se m\u00ealant \u00e0 la vie culturelle et artistique qui est d\u00e9bordante d\u2019enthousiasme \u00e0 Paris au cours des ann\u00e9es 1950, une d\u00e9cennie au cours de laquelle la peinture abstraite est triomphante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VI &#8211; LA PLONGEE DANS L\u2019ABSTRACTION CALLIGRAPHIQUE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lorsqu\u2019on est face \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre de Zhang Hua, une question directe se fait jour chez bien des collectionneurs&nbsp;: quels ont \u00e9t\u00e9 ses confr\u00e8res et consoeurs les plus proches en mati\u00e8re de cr\u00e9ation esth\u00e9tique&nbsp;? S\u2019agit-il d\u2019\u0153uvres de la maturit\u00e9&nbsp;? Il n\u2019emp\u00eache que son profond ancrage dans une approche occidentale et non occidentalisante \u00e9limine d\u2019embl\u00e9e une autre interrogation tr\u00e8s l\u00e9gitime&nbsp;: comment le situer dans le vaste monde de la cr\u00e9ation picturale et calligraphique chinoise&nbsp;? Il vient tr\u00e8s naturellement \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e que ces p\u00e9riples \u00e0 travers le monde occidental ont permis \u00e0 ce peintre de r\u00e9aliser une immense et naturelle synth\u00e8se o\u00f9 l\u2019histoire a fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 des imaginaires si diff\u00e9rents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De son travail \u00e9manent une \u00e9nergie naturelle, une aisance calligraphique du trac\u00e9 o\u00f9 se succ\u00e8dent, en pr\u00e9sences structurantes, concomitantes, faussement al\u00e9atoires, point, crochet montant ou descendant, trait vertical ou horizontal. Selon les \u0153uvres qu\u2019il a produites en grand nombre au fil de ses enthousiasmes et d\u00e9sirs, Zhang Hua sait conjuguer une \u00e9conomie de traits et de points devenus des taches sur un fond dont le ton est une paroi, une strate qui figent une polychromie et une gestuelle renvoyant \u00e0 la chair et \u00e0 l\u2019os des cr\u00e9ateurs chinois des dynasties pass\u00e9es, tel Wang l\u2019encre qui, au d\u00e9but du 8<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, lan\u00e7ait sur le papier ou la soie des traits inattendus en \u00e9paisseur et en longueur provenant des poils de sa barbe. A contrario des approches strat\u00e9giques op\u00e9r\u00e9es par Joan Miro\u2019, qui, durant les ann\u00e9es 60, macule ses \u0153uvres de zones liminaires, contr\u00f4lant l&rsquo;espace de couleur avec des signes minimalistes&nbsp;: lignes, points et coups de pinceau de couleur, appliqu\u00e9s avec la prudence&nbsp;\u00ab&nbsp;du geste d&rsquo;un archer japonais&nbsp;\u00bb, pour reprendre les mots de l\u2019artiste catalan. L\u2019exemple \u2013 en fait, le contre-exemple &#8211; que constitue Miro\u2019 par rapport \u00e0 Zhang Hua montre, pour l\u2019un, un imposant et riche d\u00e9veloppement d\u2019un univers foisonnant tandis que l\u2019autre vise \u00e0 une simplification extr\u00eame des formes. Deux fa\u00e7ons de rendre une esth\u00e9tique partant de l\u2019abstraction et aboutissant \u00e0 des parcours bien diff\u00e9rents. Comme le ma\u00eetre catalan, Zhang Hua aime prolonger, transposer ses \u0153uvres vers des objets divers (ill. 50 et 51) (vase, meubles, \u2026), ce qui est de mise chez nombre d\u2019artistes occidentaux comme de peintres chinois. Ainsi en va-t-il de ce vase des ann\u00e9es 50-60 que les potiers et c\u00e9ramistes Denise et Peter Orlando auraient affectionn\u00e9, un vase int\u00e9gr\u00e9 dans somptueux bouquet de saison, bouquet aupr\u00e8s duquel un flacon c\u00e9ramique bleu et blanc chinois apporte sa touche d\u2019exotisme. L\u2019artiste a sign\u00e9, comme il en est coutumier, de son sceau cinabre, et pour l\u2019occasion de ses nom et pr\u00e9nom devenus des motifs qui se m\u00ealent aux traces diverses \u00e9parses dans cette partie vectrice de profondeur face au bouquet o\u00f9 les motifs g\u00e9om\u00e9triques sont devenus des \u00e9l\u00e9ments d\u2019\u00eatre myst\u00e9rieux.
