Ecrivain, po\u00e8te, artiste, sc\u00e9nariste&nbsp;? Il s\u2019est illustr\u00e9 dans tous ces domaines&nbsp;! Mais il a d\u00fb endosser bien d\u2019autres qualificatifs qui lui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 assign\u00e9s o\u00f9 qu\u2019il s\u2019est appropri\u00e9s&nbsp;: Allemand, juif, Fran\u00e7ais, catholique, Espagnol, agnostique, Mexicain. Sa vie illustre tout ce que l\u2019histoire de l\u2019Europe du si\u00e8cle dernier a pu avoir de tragique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Petit fils de Max Aub (1828-1901) pr\u00e9sident r\u00e9formateur de la communaut\u00e9 juive de Munich, neveu d\u2019un \u00e9crivain, l\u2019excentrique Ludwig Aub (1862-1926), Max Aub Mohrenwitz, dit Max Aub, est n\u00e9 le 2 juin 1903, \u00e0 Paris o\u00f9 ses parents, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric-Guillaume Aub (1877, M\u00fcnich &#8211; 1951, Valence), n\u00e9gociant et Suzanne Mohrenwitz-Springer (1881, Paris \u2013 1962, Valence), se sont mari\u00e9s moins d\u2019un an auparavant. Lorsque la guerre \u00e9clate, son p\u00e8re est en Espagne pour affaire. D\u00e9clar\u00e9 persona non grata et class\u00e9 comme dangereux, comme tous les Allemands de souche vivant en France, il fait venir sa famille \u00e0 Valence en Espagne. Max devient espagnol en 1916. Baptis\u00e9, il poursuit n\u00e9anmoins sa scolarit\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019Escuela moderna, une \u00e9cole fond\u00e9e par le penseur anarchiste Francisco Ferrer, la\u00efque, mixte, rationaliste, promouvant l\u2019\u00e9galit\u00e9 sociale, l\u2019autonomie et l\u2019entraide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apr\u00e8s un passage par l\u2019Institut General et Technique Luis Vives, il commence \u00e0 travailler avec son p\u00e8re en tant que repr\u00e9sentant de commerce, mais sa vocation est autre. Au hasard d\u2019une tourn\u00e9e, il rencontre Jules Romains qui le met en contact avec le milieu litt\u00e9raire madril\u00e8ne. Il n\u2019a que 20 ans. Ses po\u00e8mes sont lus \u00e0 l&rsquo;Ateneo de Madrid et il participe aux&nbsp;<em>tertulia<\/em> du caf\u00e9 Reg<a><\/a><a><\/a>ina&nbsp;avec les po\u00e8tes Salinas, Garcia Lorca,&nbsp;Manuel Azana et bien d\u2019autres.&nbsp;Il rencontre aussi Rafael Alberti, Jorge Guillen, Luis Bunuel, Salvador Dali. \u00ab&nbsp;Dans le petit c\u00e9nacle, \u00e9crit en 1959, dans les <em>Lettres nouvelles<\/em>, l\u2019hispaniste Claude Couffon, il repr\u00e9sentait l\u2019humour, la fantaisie, le go\u00fbt du th\u00e9\u00e2tre, l\u2019esprit d\u2019entreprise.\u00bb. Il commence \u00e0 voyager hors d&rsquo;Espagne en Allemagne, en Russie, en France o\u00f9, toujours gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 Romains, il entre en contact avec les gens de la Nouvelle Revue Fran\u00e7aise&nbsp;: dix belles ann\u00e9es \u00e0 se p\u00e9n\u00e9trer de culture europ\u00e9enne d\u2019avant-garde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9clenchement de la guerre civile, il rejoint l&rsquo;Alliance des \u00e9crivains antifascistes pour la d\u00e9fense de la culture et devient attach\u00e9 culturel \u00e0 l&rsquo;ambassade d&rsquo;Espagne \u00e0 Paris. C\u2019est l\u00e0 qu\u2019avec son compatriote Josep Renau, il passe commande \u00e0 Pablo Picasso d\u2019une peinture pour le pavillon de la jeune r\u00e9publique espagnole de l\u2019Exposition universelle de 1937. Le sujet sera, comme on le sait, le&nbsp;bombardement de Guernica par les&nbsp;avions de la&nbsp;L\u00e9gion Condor&nbsp;et des fascistes italiens. En 1938, il \u00e9crit le sc\u00e9nario de <em>Sierra de Teruel<\/em>, bas\u00e9 sur le livre <em>L\u2019Espoir<\/em> de Malraux. Le film, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par l\u2019\u00e9crivain et aventurier fran\u00e7ais, est interdit par Franco.&nbsp;Le gouvernement fran\u00e7ais fait de m\u00eame<a href=\"#cite_note-85\"><\/a>, et enferme aussi dans des camps de concentration les R\u00e9publicains venus chercher refuge sur son territoire. Un document de la Suret\u00e9 nationale dat\u00e9 du 27 mars 1940 signale ainsi Max Aub&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;isra\u00eblite allemand, naturalis\u00e9 espagnol par les autorit\u00e9s r\u00e9publicaines pendant la guerre civile qui serait un communiste tr\u00e8s dangereux&nbsp;\u00bb. Il est d\u2019abord intern\u00e9 au camp de concentration du Vernet, en Ari\u00e8ge, puis \u00e0 Djelfa, en Alg\u00e9rie. Gr\u00e2ce aux efforts du gouvernement mexicain, il est finalement lib\u00e9r\u00e9 en 1942. Le Mexique devient son nouveau pays d\u2019adoption. La guerre d\u2019Espagne et l\u2019exp\u00e9rience des camps seront le principal terreau de son \u0153uvre litt\u00e9raire&nbsp;: <em>Le labyrinthe magique, Manuscrit Corbeau, Journal de Djelfa<\/em>\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Mexico, il devient professeur \u00e0 l&rsquo;institut cin\u00e9matographique. Il \u00e9crit une cinquantaine de sc\u00e9narios pour le cin\u00e9ma dont celui de <em>Los Olvidados<\/em> de Luis Bu\u0148uel. Il poursuit son travail d\u2019\u00e9criture et signe des romans, des nouvelles, des essais, des critiques litt\u00e9raires L\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019Aub prend alors deux directions principales, diff\u00e9rentes mais bien s\u00fbr tr\u00e8s li\u00e9es entre elles et \u00e0 ce qu\u2019il a v\u00e9cu. place grandissante dans la vie de Max. Chaque jour, il se rend chez Paulino Masip \u2014 autre \u00e9crivain, dramaturge espagnol exil\u00e9 qui d\u00e9c\u00e8dera \u00e0 Mexico en 1963 \u2014 pour jouer aux cartes avec toute la famille. Par la suite, Max accueillera chez lui, rue Euclides, ses amis pour jouer au poker. Dans sa correspondance, un projet de recueil d\u2019aphorismes intitul\u00e9 <em>Tricheries<\/em> (Trampas) fait la part belle \u00e0 cette activit\u00e9. Certains aphorismes donnent le ton de sa pens\u00e9e, comme celui-ci&nbsp;: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u00ab&nbsp;La triche ce n&rsquo;est pas de la fraude, ni du mensonge, ni une faute, ni une tromperie, ni un coup de couteau, ni une arnaque, ni du vol, ni de l&rsquo;escroquerie, ni du larcin.C&rsquo;est la dext\u00e9rit\u00e9, l&rsquo;art, l&rsquo;habilet\u00e9, la ma\u00eetrise, le sang froid, le savoir-faire, le succ\u00e8s, la main, le toucher, le tact, l\u2019astuce, le truc, le stratag\u00e8me, l&rsquo;habilet\u00e9, le diable.&nbsp;\u00bb<a href=\"https:\/\/alaincardenas.com\/blog\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=7186&amp;action=edit#_ftn1\"><strong>[1]<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Toute son \u0153uvre est impr\u00e9gn\u00e9e par cette id\u00e9e de triche, d\u2019imposture et de faux-semblant. M\u00eame en tant qu\u2019auteur, il se d\u00e9robe, il cache son jeu. Ainsi, il ne signe pas son <em>Manuscrit Corbeau.<\/em> L\u2019auteur ce n\u2019est pas lui, mais un myst\u00e9rieux corbeau appel\u00e9 Jacobo, qui a tent\u00e9 de d\u00e9crire et de comprendre les m\u0153urs et les coutumes de l\u2019\u00eatre humain qu\u2019il observe dans le camp de concentration du Vernet dans un carnet traduit ensuite de la langue corbeau au castillan par un certain Aben Maximo Albarron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Puis c\u2019est Jusep Torres Campalans, une biographie comprenant un \u00ab&nbsp;carnet vert&nbsp;\u00bb, une enqu\u00eate, une interview, un catalogue d\u2019\u0153uvres d\u2019un artiste catalan ayant v\u00e9cu \u00e0 Paris avant la premi\u00e8re guerre mondiale et ayant c\u00f4toy\u00e9 les milieux d\u2019avant-garde. En 1914, apr\u00e8s huit ans d&rsquo;intense production artistique, et avant le d\u00e9clenchement de la guerre civile espagnole, ce myst\u00e9rieux Campalans aurait d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de s&rsquo;exiler dans les montagnes du Chiapas, au Mexique, o\u00f9 il aurait pass\u00e9 le reste de sa vie. Son dernier contact avec le monde artistique europ\u00e9en est un bref entretien avec Max Aub, qu&rsquo;il rencontre par hasard dans une librairie de San Cristobal de las Casas. La biographie en espagnol parait en 1957, peu apr\u00e8s la mort de l\u2019artiste. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 Max, les \u0153uvres de Campalans sont expos\u00e9es \u00e0 la galerie Excelsior de Mexico en 1958, puis \u00e0 la Bodley Gallery de New York en 1962. Des articles paraissent, des criques s\u2019enthousiasment. Tout le monde veut savoir qui est d\u00e9sign\u00e9, par Picasso lui-m\u00eame, comme le v\u00e9ritable p\u00e8re du cubisme. Sauf que Campalans est en fait un personnage invent\u00e9 par Max Aub lui-m\u00eame. Il a tout fait&nbsp;: textes et \u0153uvres picturales&nbsp;! C\u2019est un \u00e9norme canular qui a pu tromper le public gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son talent et \u00e0 la complicit\u00e9 de Jean Cassou, conservateur en chef du Mus\u00e9e d&rsquo;art moderne de la Ville de Paris, d\u2019Andr\u00e9 Malraux, de Picasso\u2026 La supercherie toutefois sera \u00e9vent\u00e9e apr\u00e8s l\u2019\u00e9dition fran\u00e7aise et sera cit\u00e9e dans l\u2019<em>Encyclop\u00e9die des farces et attrapes et des mystifications<\/em> de Fran\u00e7ois Caradec et No\u00ebl Arnaud, en 1964. Plus r\u00e9cemment, en juin 2003, le mus\u00e9e espagnol Reina Sof\u00eda a consacr\u00e9 au personnage de fiction une exposition, \u00ab&nbsp;hommage m\u00e9rit\u00e9 \u00e0 l&rsquo;esprit humoristique et au talent de conteur de Max Aub&nbsp;\u00bb. pseudo-ma\u00eetre catalan, on trouve les cartes d\u2019un jeu paru quelques ann\u00e9es apr\u00e8s la biographie&nbsp;: <em>Juego de cartas<\/em>. Ce livre-jeu que l\u2019on peut voir de temps en temps expos\u00e9 au Mus\u00e9e fran\u00e7ais de la carte \u00e0 jouer est une m\u00e9taphore de l\u2019importance du jeu et du hasard dans le d\u00e9roulement d\u2019une vie. Il se pr\u00e9sente sous la forme de deux jeux de 52 cartes plus un ou deux jokers par jeu, soit 106 ou 108 cartes. Les cartes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9dit\u00e9es \u00e0 300 exemplaires par le po\u00e8te Alejandro Finisterre (1919-2007), autre exil\u00e9 espagnol auquel est attribu\u00e9 la cr\u00e9ation du baby-foot alors qu\u2019il \u00e9tait en convalescence dans un h\u00f4pital de Barcelone, pendant la guerre d\u2019Espagne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au recto de chacune des cartes on trouve un dessin m\u00ealant tr\u00e8s symboliquement les figures et enseignes fran\u00e7aises (pique, c\u0153ur, carreau, tr\u00e8fle) avec les figures et enseignes espagnoles (coupe, \u00e9p\u00e9e, b\u00e2ton, denier). On remarque sur le Joker le dessin des deux lettres J (pour Joker) et C (pour Comodin) qui n\u2019est autre que la signature de Jusep Campalans. Petit clin d\u2019\u0153il de Max. Au verso, un texte \u00e9pistolaire. Aub joue sur le double sens du mot \u00ab&nbsp;carta&nbsp;\u00bb, qui en espagnol signifie \u00ab&nbsp;lettre, correspondance&nbsp;\u00bb et en fran\u00e7ais \u00e9voque les cartes \u00e0 jouer. Les lettres ont \u00e9t\u00e9 traduites en fran\u00e7ais pour la premi\u00e8re fois en 2019 par Nicole Laurent-Catrice, mais leur \u00e9dition attend encore. Chacune d\u2019elles concerne un m\u00eame homme, un certain Maximo Ballesteros r\u00e9cemment d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9. Certaines traitent des causes de sa mort (suicide&nbsp;? assassinat&nbsp;?), d\u2019autres \u00e9voquent sa vie amoureuse, ses opinions, son caract\u00e8re, etc. Les lettres ne sont pas dat\u00e9es, elles n\u2019ont donc pas d\u2019ordre et les exp\u00e9diteurs sont le plus souvent d\u00e9sign\u00e9s par leur pr\u00e9nom. Max Aub apparait comme l\u2019auteur de la r\u00e8gle de jeu et le collecteur des lettres qu\u2019il n\u2019aurait fait que retranscrire, comme le laissent entendre, par exemple, l\u2019indication \u00ab&nbsp;illisible&nbsp;\u00bb sur une des lettres, ou les fautes d\u2019orthographe dont une lettre attribu\u00e9e \u00e0 Amalia Lopez est truff\u00e9e. Ce Maxime Ballesteros partage avec l\u2019auteur du jeu le pr\u00e9nom. Quant au nom, qui signifie Arbal\u00e9triers, il est peut-\u00eatre une allusion \u00e0 un certain Gonzalez Balestero emprisonn\u00e9 au Vernet avec lui ou bien encore \u00e0 la famille Ballester, des artistes connus \u00e0 Valence, qui ont probablement contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 son \u00e9ducation artistique et ont eux aussi \u00e9migr\u00e9 au Mexique. La r\u00e8gle est toute simple. Il faut trouver qui est Ballesteros, comme il l\u2019\u00e9crit dans son journal&nbsp;: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u00ab pour frapper fort ceux du Nouveau Roman, \u00e9crire Juego de cartas, cinquante-deux lettres imprim\u00e9es sur des cartes \u00e0 jouer. On les bat, on les distribue, on les lit, c&rsquo;est chaque fois une autre histoire, selon le hasard. \u00bb.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Le jeu dresse ainsi de ce personnage fictif une image morcel\u00e9e et souvent contradictoire. Peut-on vraiment gagner&nbsp;? Pla\u00e7ant le jeu au c\u0153ur du processus de cr\u00e9ation litt\u00e9raire, comme l\u2019\u00e9crit Julie Fintzel, l\u2019\u00e9crivain exil\u00e9 pose la question de l\u2019identit\u00e9 et de l\u2019assignation, non seulement au sujet de son personnage, mais aussi \u00e0 son propre sujet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans <em>Romans du hasard, <\/em>Sebastien Wit examine quatre romans \u00e9crits entre 1962 et 1973, qui ont pour point commun leur usage de la tradition divinatoire,&nbsp;et questionnent ou invitent le lecteur \u00e0 la participation : <em>Composition n\u00b01<\/em> de Marc Saporta, <em>Marelle<\/em> de Julio Cort\u00e1zar,<em> Le Ch\u00e2teau des destins crois\u00e9s <\/em>d&rsquo;Italo Calvino et <em>Le Ma\u00eetre du Haut Ch\u00e2teau<\/em> de Philip K. Dick. Tant sur le plan politique que litt\u00e9raire, le moment des ann\u00e9es 1960 co\u00efncide selon l\u2019auteur avec une remise en cause radicale de l&rsquo;autorit\u00e9.
