De Mario Urteaga (1875-1957) \u00e0 Juan Manuel Cardenas-Castro (1891-1988)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>par Alain Cardenas-Castro<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/alaincardenas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Programme-Univ-e-te-CEHA-Final.pdf\"><strong>Ce texte a fait l&rsquo;objet d&rsquo;une intervention lors du colloque qui s&rsquo;est tenu \u00e0 l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 de Picardie Jules Verne dans le cadre de l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 d&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 des hispanistes d&rsquo;Amiens, du 4 au 7 juillet 2022.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Les peintres p\u00e9ruviens Mario Urteaga (Cajamarca 1875 &#8211; Cajamarca 1957) et Juan Manuel Cardenas-Castro (Urubamba, 1891 &#8211; Paris, 1988) sont des cr\u00e9ateurs dont les parcours respectifs ont \u00e9t\u00e9 marqu\u00e9s par l&rsquo;engagement, la curiosit\u00e9 et la pluridisciplinarit\u00e9. Malgr\u00e9 des trajectoires diff\u00e9rentes tout en suivant des domaines divers et vari\u00e9s comme le dessin de presse, l&rsquo;anthropologie et la mus\u00e9ographie pour Cardenas-Castro ou l&rsquo;enseignement, la politique et le n\u00e9goce de b\u00e9tail pour Urteaga, on per\u00e7oit dans l&rsquo;\u0153uvre de ces deux peintres autodidactes un fil conducteur commun : l&rsquo;importance donn\u00e9e \u00e0 leur culture d&rsquo;origine provinciale en t\u00e9moins fid\u00e8les de la vie indig\u00e8ne. Ce profond attachement qui les relie \u00e0 leur terre natale est visible dans leurs peintures, des paysages et des sc\u00e8nes d\u00e9crivant le quotidien des habitants de la r\u00e9gion de Cajamarca pour Urteaga et de la r\u00e9gion de Cusco pour Cardenas-Castro.<\/p>\n<p>Consid\u00e9r\u00e9s aujourd&rsquo;hui comme des repr\u00e9sentants de la peinture indig\u00e9niste, Urteaga et Cardenas-Castro n\u2019ont pourtant pas adh\u00e9r\u00e9 \u00e0 ce mouvement de l&rsquo;avant-garde artistique des ann\u00e9es 1920 au P\u00e9rou. L\u2019indig\u00e9nisme, mouvement proposant un vaste programme culturel et politique centr\u00e9 sur les revendications autochtones. Archives Cardenas-Castro<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Des premi\u00e8res \u0153uvres de Mario Urteaga (1898-1903)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mario Urteaga (ill.\u00a01) est n\u00e9 en 1875 au Nord du P\u00e9rou, \u00e0 Cajamarca, ville entour\u00e9e d\u2019une vall\u00e9e fertile qui en fait encore aujourd&rsquo;hui un important centre agricole et d\u2019\u00e9levage de bovins. Il effectue ses \u00e9tudes au coll\u00e8ge San Ram\u00f3n<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> de Cajamarca. Il commence \u00e0 dessiner en 1891 \u2014 l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e de naissance de Juan Manuel Cardenas-Castro (ill. 2). Urteaga r\u00e9alise au fusain des copies de portraits photographiques. L&rsquo;ann\u00e9e suivante, en 1892, ne b\u00e9n\u00e9ficiant plus de l&rsquo;aide financi\u00e8re de ses parents il est oblig\u00e9 d&rsquo;interrompre son cursus scolaire pour trouver du travail. Il continue malgr\u00e9 tout \u00e0 dessiner r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement. En 1895, il s&rsquo;associe avec deux amis pour monter un n\u00e9goce de b\u00e9tail.<\/p>\n<p>Les premi\u00e8res \u0153uvres connues d&rsquo;Urteaga datent de 1898. La m\u00eame ann\u00e9e, il part pour la capitale p\u00e9ruvienne o\u00f9 il enseigne la comptabilit\u00e9, l&rsquo;histoire et la g\u00e9ographie \u00e0 l&rsquo;Institut Chalaco<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a>, un travail qui lui est propos\u00e9 par son neveu Horacio H. Urteaga<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Des premi\u00e8res \u0153uvres de Juan Manuel Cardenas Castro (1915-1920)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Juan Manuel Cardenas Castro est n\u00e9 en 1891 \u00e0 Urubamba, un village situ\u00e9 dans la Vall\u00e9e sacr\u00e9e des Incas. Depuis son enfance \u00e0 Urubamba et \u00e0 Cusco il dessine en autodidacte. Il repr\u00e9sente son environnement, les gens, les paysages, les architectures de la vall\u00e9e sacr\u00e9e et de la ville nombril du monde, Cusco. Au cours de la deuxi\u00e8me d\u00e9c\u00e9nnie du XX<sup>e<\/sup> s. il part pour la capitale et d\u00e9veloppe une activit\u00e9 de dessinateur de presse en fr\u00e9quentant les artistes et intellectuels p\u00e9ruviens regroup\u00e9s \u00e0 Lima<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a> tels Jos\u00e9 Carlos Mari\u00e1tegui (1894-1930), Ricardo Palma (1833-1919), Abraham Valdelomar (1888-1919)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Cardenas-Castro r\u00e9alise des portraits dessin\u00e9s comme Urteaga. Mais \u00e0 contrario d&rsquo;Urtaga qui travaille d&rsquo;apr\u00e8s portrait photographique, Cardenas Castro dessine le plus souvent d\u2019apr\u00e8s mod\u00e8le vivant. Que ce soit des illustrations ou des caricatures pour la revue Variedades (1916-1920) ou des portraits de la bourgeoisie cusquenienne. Il installe un atelier photographique professionnel \u00e0 Cajamaca qu&rsquo;il sera oblig\u00e9 de fermer quelques ann\u00e9es plus tard, en 1915, par manque de mat\u00e9riel du au d\u00e9clenchement de la Premi\u00e8re guerre mondiale. Il enseigne alors le dessin dans son ancien coll\u00e8ge San Ram\u00f3n. Dans le m\u00eame temps, Urteaga travaille pour le journal <em>El Ferrocarril<\/em> <a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\">[10]<\/a> il y r\u00e9dige des articles sur la science mais aussi sur l&rsquo;art et la politique. A partir de l\u00e0, Urteaga se pr\u00e9sente aux \u00e9lections avec le soutien des groupes de travailleurs et d&rsquo;artisans de la r\u00e9gion qu&rsquo;il ne remporte pas. Il d\u00e9laisse alors la carri\u00e8re politique.<\/p>\n<p>En 1920, Urteaga r\u00e9alise le tableau <em>Despu\u00e9s de <\/em><em>la \u00ab\u00a0faina\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> (ill.\u00a015), \u0153uvre consid\u00e9r\u00e9e par son neveu Camilo Blas<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\">[11]<\/a> (Cajamarca 1903 &#8211; Lima 1985) \u2014 qui fait partie des peintres form\u00e9s par Jos\u00e9 Sabogal<a href=\"#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\">[12]<\/a> (Cajabamba 1888 &#8211; Lima 1956) \u2014 comme la premi\u00e8re peinture indig\u00e9niste d&rsquo;Urteaga. Il s&rsquo;installe \u00e0 Paris et y restera jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 sa mort en 1988.<\/p>\n<p>Au cours de cette troisi\u00e8me d\u00e9cennie du XX<sup>e<\/sup> s. Cardenas-Castro, loin de son pays, continue \u00e0 peindre les paysages typiques du Sud-andin.<\/p>\n<p>En 1926, il expose au salon du Franc la peinture <em>Imprecion<\/em> qui repr\u00e9sente deux lamas \u00e9voluant dans un paysage montagneux (ill.\u00a016). A cette occasion le tableau est acquis par l&rsquo;Etat fran\u00e7ais.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>De l\u2019\u0153uvre de Mario Urteaga\u00a0entre art populaire et sophistication classique<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>En 1938, une nouvelle exposition des \u0153uvres d\u2019Urteaga est programm\u00e9e \u00e0 Lima mais elle n&rsquo;aura finalement pas lieu. En effet le mouvement indig\u00e9niste laisse place peu \u00e0 peu aux courants de l\u2019art abstrait qui s\u2019impose sur la sc\u00e8ne artistique.<\/p>\n<p>C&rsquo;est en 1955 que l&rsquo;Institut d&rsquo;Art contemporain<a href=\"#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\">[13]<\/a> (IAC) de Lima rend un hommage \u00e0 Mario Urteaga. Carlos Raygada dans un nouvel article d\u00e9di\u00e9 au cr\u00e9ateur dans le quotidien p\u00e9ruvien <em>El Comercio<\/em><a href=\"#_ftn18\" name=\"_ftnref18\">[18]<\/a> compare Urteaga au Douanier Rousseau (1844-1910) pour son \u00ab\u00a0authentique innocence dans l\u2019expression et la forme\u00a0\u00bb<a href=\"#_ftn19\" name=\"_ftnref19\">[19]<\/a> et sa volont\u00e9 de d\u00e9peindre le quotidien du P\u00e9rou urbanis\u00e9 en apportant \u00abquelque chose de nouveau au vaste r\u00e9pertoire des arts visuels \u00bb<a href=\"#_ftn20\" name=\"_ftnref20\">[20]<\/a>. Raygada ajoute que les peintures expos\u00e9es repr\u00e9sentent \u00e9galement des sc\u00e8nes de travaux agricoles et de f\u00eates ayant cours \u00e0 Cajamarca, la ville natale de l&rsquo;artiste. Il souligne \u00e9galement \u00e0 quel point le peintre a progress\u00e9 dans son utilisation de la couleur et qu\u2019il \u00ab apporte quelque chose de nouveau au vaste r\u00e9pertoire des arts visuels \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>A l&rsquo;occasion de cette exposition \u00e0 la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 philarmonique, l&rsquo;arch\u00e9ologue et critique d&rsquo;art Jorge C. Ils collaborent ensemble \u00e0 la r\u00e9alisation d\u2019un ouvrage sur la c\u00e9ramique pr\u00e9colombienne, Muelle r\u00e9dige le texte et Blas dessine les pi\u00e8ces qu\u2019il choisi dans les collections du mus\u00e9e national de Lima (voir en bibliographie).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>De l\u2019\u0153uvre de Juan Manuel Cardenas Castro entre art et sciences<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;ann\u00e9e 1937 est \u00e9galement une ann\u00e9e importante dans la trajectoire de Cardenas-Castro. Elle est l&rsquo;aboutissement de son temps de travail d\u00e9di\u00e9 depuis 1928 \u00e0 l&rsquo;inventaire et \u00e0 la r\u00e9organisation des collections du mus\u00e9e d&rsquo;ethnographie du Trocad\u00e9ro qui se transforme en mus\u00e9e de l&rsquo;Homme. mus\u00e9e de l&rsquo;Homme qui ouvre ses portes au public \u00e0 l&rsquo;occasion de l&rsquo;Exposition internationale des arts et techniques de la vie moderne cette ann\u00e9e l\u00e0. En effet, outre son travail de peinture en atelier, Juan Manuel Cardenas Castro a une activit\u00e9 de mus\u00e9ographe au sein de l&rsquo;\u00e9quipe form\u00e9e par le m\u00e9decin, anthropologue et am\u00e9ricaniste Paul Rivet, le fondateur et directeur du mus\u00e9e de l&rsquo;Homme. Le travail ethno-anthropologique que m\u00e8ne Cardenas-castro dans ce cadre mus\u00e9al lui permet de partager ses connaissances du monde andin. Il documente les objets des collections am\u00e9ricaines et sa connaissance de la langue quechua est une aide cons\u00e9quente \u00e0 la recherche scientifique. Cela lui permet \u00e9galement de retrouver ses racines andines et sa culture d&rsquo;origine. L&rsquo;\u00e9tude et la documentation des collections ethnographiques am\u00e9ricaines, notamment les collections d&rsquo;art ancien p\u00e9ruvien, lui permettent d\u2019\u00e9laborer sa production plastique au regard d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ments scientifiques. Cardenas Castro restitue de m\u00e9moire les \u00e9v\u00e9nements et les acteurs d\u2019un pass\u00e9 plus lointain, parfois \u00e9loign\u00e9 de plusieurs dizaines d\u2019ann\u00e9es. Deux mani\u00e8res figuratives de traiter les sc\u00e8nes d&rsquo;un quotidien v\u00e9cu \u00e0 des distances spatiales et temporelles diff\u00e9rentes avec une ma\u00eetrise magistrale de leur art. Ces deux mani\u00e8res de faire s&rsquo;expliquent par diff\u00e9rentes pratiques utilis\u00e9es au cours de leurs apprentissages autodidactes. En effet, Urteaga commence par dessiner d&rsquo;apr\u00e8s des reproductions photographiques ou en consultant la presse \u00e9crite pour s\u00e9lectionner des images \u00e0 reproduire. Son style se construit en observant et reproduisant des images fixes. Il d\u00e9veloppe ainsi ses compositions \u00e0 partir d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ments statiques. L\u2019assemblage de ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments regroup\u00e9s en p\u00f4les de personnages forme des sc\u00e8nes multiples,\u00a0et, dans une m\u00eame composition, leur r\u00e9partition en plans successifs exprime le mouvement. A contrario, le style de Juan Manuel Cardenas-Castro s\u2019est d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 \u00e0 partir d\u2019une pratique du dessin d&rsquo;apr\u00e8s mod\u00e8le vivant. Que ce soit en observant les personnages de la vie quotidienne de sa r\u00e9gion natale du Cusco ou les acteurs des \u00e9v\u00e9nements et spectacles de la capitale, Il restitue par la somme de ses observations un rendu synth\u00e9tique r\u00e9sultant de l&rsquo;analyse des mod\u00e8les en mouvement.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00ab\u00a0Dans l&rsquo;imaginaire collectif, ces sc\u00e8nes paysannes semblaient finalement capter les id\u00e9aux de l&rsquo;indig\u00e9nisme sans en partager les limites programmatiques.
