Lors des visites \u00e0 l\u2019atelier d\u2019Octon, dans l\u2019H\u00e9rault, lieu o\u00f9 cr\u00e9ent et travaillent les deux protagonistes des \u00e9ditions Verdigris, Mark Lintott, typographe, compositeur et relieur et Judith Rothchild, pastelliste et graveuse en mani\u00e8re noire, j\u2019ai eu l\u2019occasion d\u2019observer et d\u2019appr\u00e9cier la flore et ses d\u00e9veloppements exub\u00e9rants. Cela ne vise pas directement les cultures, vigne, olivier, figuier de Barbarie, mais plut\u00f4t une plante dite succulente, l\u2019agave.<\/p>\n<p>Commune sur tout le pourtour de la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e, elle s\u2019installe l\u00e0 o\u00f9 le climat est plut\u00f4t chaud et sec et lui permet ainsi de prolif\u00e9rer, en particulier sur les terrains bien drain\u00e9s, voire sur les bords de routes, o\u00f9 lorsque la plante est en fin de vie, elle dresse une hampe de plusieurs m\u00e8tres de haut. Lors de la floraison, qui indique cette fin de vie de la plante, sous le poids des plantules apparaissant aux emplacements des fleurs, la hampe tombe, permettant aux plantules de s\u2019enraciner au contact du sol. Parall\u00e8lement, sur un diam\u00e8tre d\u2019un \u00e0 deux m\u00e8tres, des plantes apparaissent autour du pied m\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>Octon ne d\u00e9roge pas \u00e0 la r\u00e8gle, et, autour des hauteurs qui se succ\u00e8dent entre Montpellier et ce village, des agaves forment comme des taches, des masses d\u00e9coup\u00e9es et vertes ou davantage bariol\u00e9es lorsqu\u2019elles sont panach\u00e9es et bord\u00e9es de zones d\u2019un jaune variable.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Mani\u00e8re noire et \u00e9l\u00e9ments v\u00e9g\u00e9taux<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Apparue au 17<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, cette technique a, comme toutes les fa\u00e7ons de cr\u00e9er, de produire des images, d\u00fb faire l\u2019objet d\u2019essais plus ou moins r\u00e9ussis avant que soit trouv\u00e9e une d\u00e9finition accept\u00e9e du processus qui permet de donner ombre et lumi\u00e8re aux \u0153uvres.<\/p>\n<p>Les graveurs en mani\u00e8re noire ont laiss\u00e9 \u00e0 la post\u00e9rit\u00e9 des \u0153uvres remarquables. Pour le 18<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, Valentine Green (1739-1813) talentueux graveur, meurt ruin\u00e9, il laisse pr\u00e8s de 400 mani\u00e8res noires, des compositions o\u00f9 le d\u00e9tail fait passer plut\u00f4t agr\u00e9ablement des descriptions historiques tr\u00e8s \u00e9difiantes, Le courant romantique qui parcourt le 19<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle en parall\u00e8le aux atrocit\u00e9s et disettes sociales diverses, permet \u00e0 Thomas Lewis Atkinson de produire, comme nombre de ses confr\u00e8res, des \u0153uvres d\u2019interpr\u00e9tation, telle cette <em>Flora<\/em> (1876), la divinit\u00e9 est entour\u00e9e d\u2019une surabondance de fleurs digne des descriptions \u00e0 venir de Zola dans <em>La faute de l\u2019abb\u00e9 Mouret<\/em>\u00a0!<\/p>\n<p>Outre l\u2019\u0153uvre de John Martin (1789, Haydon Bridge \u2013 1854, \u00eele de Man), on se doit de mentionner le travail de Richard Earlom (1743, Londres \u2013 1822) qui n\u2019h\u00e9site pas, notamment dans sa s\u00e9rie du <em>Liber veritatis<\/em>, dont il existe plusieurs \u00e9ditions entre 1776 et 1802 \u00e0 m\u00ealer mani\u00e8re noire et eau-forte. Il sait aussi traduire un faste et une abondance dignes des Flamands, comme avec <em>A fruit piece<\/em>, une mani\u00e8re noire qui montre toutes les ressources du sombre et du clair. Judith en est presque une \u00e9manation, si ce n\u2019est que le vraisemblable devient r\u00e9el, le sien, et, surtout, sur aucune des \u0153uvres on ne constate de motivation scientifique qui ferait na\u00eetre une objectivit\u00e9 \u00e0 des fins scientifiques. ACC<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Autour de l\u2019atelier et aussi de la maison, Judith Rothchild n\u2019a \u2014 pratiquement et quotidiennement \u2014 qu\u2019\u00e0 regarder en levant ou baissant les yeux pour observer la vie de cette plante terriblement dangereuse pour qui n\u2019y est pas assez attentif.<\/p>\n<p>Cela a valu, outre les immenses dessins \u00e0 la mine de plomb qui sont fix\u00e9s le long d\u2019un des murs de l\u2019atelier, la toute r\u00e9cente mani\u00e8re noire repr\u00e9sentant un imposant sujet dont ne partie de la hampe a \u00e9t\u00e9 retenue comme partie caract\u00e9ristique du stade de vie de ce sp\u00e9cimen imposant. Le tout premier plan qui fait la part belle \u00e0 cette plante n\u2019en a pas oubli\u00e9 pour autant les brins d\u2019herbe qui sont au premier plan, une fa\u00e7on discr\u00e8te de rappeler que la mani\u00e8re noire tol\u00e8re aussi d\u2019autres variantes techniques que permet la taille douce pour le travail autre de la mati\u00e8re. L\u2019arri\u00e8re-plan n\u2019a pas, non plus, \u00e9t\u00e9 oubli\u00e9\u00a0: un pin apparu comme en positif sur une surface sombre voisine avec une ramure autre, plus myst\u00e9rieuse. Si Judith Rothchild r\u00e9v\u00e8le ainsi autant son talent et sa virtuosit\u00e9 graphique, elle reste, avant toutes choses, attentive \u00e0 son cadre, \u00e0 son environnement qui recr\u00e9e ici une nature tr\u00e8s impulsive. On retrouve ce m\u00eame soin dans les \u0153uvres de Vittore Carpaccio, notamment avec ce\u00a0<em>Jeune chevalier dans un paysage <\/em>(1505), [huile sur toile, 218 \u00d7 151 cm, Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid].
