Paris : \u00a0mus\u00e9e national d&rsquo;Art moderne de Paris, juin-sept. 1949<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>D\u00c9PARTS<\/p>\n<p>J\u2019ai\u00a0aim\u00e9 le face \u00e0 face avec les coloris des s\u00e9rigraphies que Matisse a imprim\u00e9es pour <em>Jazz<\/em>, pas les formes humaines, un peu trop simplifi\u00e9es et assez d\u00e9personnalis\u00e9es car trop proches de d\u00e9coupes primordiales (ill.1 &amp; 2) sans vraiment de cachet particulier \u2013 justement \u2013 pour les personnages, a contrario des formes v\u00e9g\u00e9tales. Ce qui \u00e9tait, dans les faits, une fa\u00e7on plus habile de mettre en avant le sens et la force de ses couleurs.<\/p>\n<p>Comme l\u2019a not\u00e9 ce magicien,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00ab\u00a0le papier d\u00e9coup\u00e9 me permet de dessiner dans la couleur. Il s\u2019agit pour moi d\u2019une simplification. Au lieu de dessiner le contour et d\u2019y installer la couleur \u2013 l\u2019un modifiant l\u2019autre -, je dessine directement dans la couleur, qui est d\u2019autant plus mesur\u00e9e qu\u2019elle n\u2019est pas compos\u00e9e. L\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ment terre-eau ne sert qu\u2019\u00e0 montrer ces feuilles dont les d\u00e9coupes sont obsessionnelles dans leur r\u00e9currence. Ces d\u00e9coupages de feuilles si fortement et compl\u00e8tement calibr\u00e9es pour s\u2019approprier un environnement qui est, au fond, abstrait, aboutissent \u00e0 une libert\u00e9 totale de l\u2019image, telle qu\u2019elle se livre en toute fin de processus. La correction botanique devient le plaisir total du d\u00e9tournement que Matisse a r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 la fa\u00e7on d\u2019un jeu savamment jou\u00e9 et ma\u00eetris\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Mais, avant cela, j\u2019avais, sans me pr\u00e9occuper de la chronologie des \u0153uvres des uns et des autres, davantage pu appr\u00e9cier les feuilles lessiv\u00e9es des philodendrons et autres esp\u00e8ces arborescentes de Lucian Freud (ill.3 &amp; (ill. 5 &amp; 6) Peter &amp; Denise Orlando, C\u00e9ramiques, ca 1980 (coll. priv\u00e9e)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>DES SUCCESSIONS D&rsquo;IMAGES<\/p>\n<p>Ma d\u00e9couverte de cette plante et de sa croissance rapide remonte aux ann\u00e9es 1960, o\u00f9, en parall\u00e8le au traitement des peintures et c\u00e9ramiques de Peter Orlando, (1921, Orange, New Jersey \u2013 2009, Saint-C\u00e9r\u00e9), les huiles et lithographies de Peter \u00e9taient tranquillis\u00e9es par une polychromie nantie et frontale, comme les c\u00e9ramiques (ill.5 &amp; 6) du couple, compl\u00e9ments de vides et de pleins, souvent pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s dans l\u2019appartement parisien de la rue Truffaut, pi\u00e8ces auxquelles Denise (1921, Paris \u2013 2017, Saint C\u00e9r\u00e9) insufflait sa truculence pleine de savoir et de force. Pour revenir \u00e0 Lucian Freud, sa description du Pandanus Veitchii \u00e0 bordures blanches (ill.4) peint vers 1968 avait la m\u00eame force sexuelle que celle du Monstera, une autre huile de petit format d\u2019une collection priv\u00e9e que j\u2019avais eue sous les yeux quelques instants, assez pour comprendre que le peintre savait lessiver les feuilles \u00e0 sa guise, \u00ab\u00a0d\u00e9passer largement leur aspect mat\u00e9riel pour en faire des accessoires mis \u00e0 [sa] disposition, en accentuant leur focus sur un personnage\u00a0\u00bb m\u2019avait-il dit au d\u00e9tour d\u2019une trav\u00e9e, lorsque je l\u2019avais rencontr\u00e9 au Centre. 10) que Sam\u00a0Szafran, pseudonyme de Samuel Berger (1934, Paris \u2013 2019, Malakoff) r\u00e9pandait sur les murs des collectionneurs sages. Cependant, les immenses huiles ou pastels de cet artiste, pour fantastiques ou \u00e9poustouflants, voire admirables qu\u2019ils soient, m\u2019ont toujours sembl\u00e9 trop proches d\u2019une veine tendant vers un hyperr\u00e9alisme \u2013 adouci, ici, certes &#8211; qui, un temps, eut le succ\u00e8s d\u00fb \u00e0 cette perfection formelle d\u00e9passant le r\u00e9el pour cr\u00e9er un sentiment de sati\u00e9t\u00e9. H\u00e9las pour moi, je n\u2019y ai jamais trouv\u00e9 un seul de ces fruits dont la forme phallique, tendue, lisse et comme parcourue de veinures incrust\u00e9es\u00a0\u00a0 montrent la pl\u00e9nitude de la plante. Freud \u2013 toujours le peintre \u2013 ne s\u2019y \u00e9tait pas tromp\u00e9 \u00a0: une fleur solitaire sur une tige de quelque dix-huit centim\u00e8tres, &#8211; la spadice &#8211; membrue et large de quatre, comme \u00e9rig\u00e9e sur l\u2019ellipse de la spathe un peu plus longue, un peu plus large, s\u2019ouvrant en l\u2019espace de 4 \u00e0 5 heures, ses fleurs femelles dispos\u00e9es \u00e0 la base, les fleurs m\u00e2les en partie sup\u00e9rieure. Quant \u00e0 la couleur, d\u2019un blanc-cr\u00e8me, elle vire \u00e0 un jaune parchemin\u00e9 et rend un liquide blanch\u00e2tre. Floraison puis \u00e9panouissement donc. Pass\u00e9 ce d\u00e9sappointement face aux panoramiques de Samuel Berger, j\u2019ai davantage appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 le portrait du pianiste et compositeur am\u00e9ricain (ill.9) Ahmad Jamal peint par R\u00e9mi Champseit (1958, Paris) fin 2000. Ce regard rapide reste essentiel, il va, d\u2019embl\u00e9e, permettre au lecteur, au public, de d\u00e9terminer s\u2019il est acquis \u00e0 ces formes et tons, conquis par les \u00e9l\u00e9ments face \u00e0 lui. Inconsciemment, comme sur cette \u0153uvre, plusieurs couches se succ\u00e8dent dans cette construction onirique\u00a0: d\u2019abord, les huit sujets les plus nourris de mati\u00e8re, les plus forts en teinte, des figures g\u00e9om\u00e9triques de ce rouge particulier. Ensuite, les \u00e9l\u00e9ments en rouge plus fin, comme un r\u00e9bus \u00e0 la Jean Hugo, qui m\u00eale les \u00e9l\u00e9ments patrimoniaux autant que les objets et animaux les plus divers, les associant alors \u00e0 leur insu. Enfin, les \u00e9l\u00e9ments au feutre, puis, plus sugg\u00e9r\u00e9s, ceux trac\u00e9s au crayon<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>. Elle \u00e9volua le jour o\u00f9 une coll\u00e8gue aux doigts verts acc\u00e9da \u00e0 ma demande r\u00e9it\u00e9r\u00e9e en me donnant une bouture de Monstera, une bouture pr\u00e9lev\u00e9e sur le bas d\u2019une tige et comprenant deux feuilles naissantes en forme de c\u0153ur, sans aucune d\u00e9coupe mais d\u00e9j\u00e0 pourvue d\u2019une racine de quelques centim\u00e8tres de long. Plac\u00e9e dans un coin pr\u00e9vu pour la voir devenir arborescente, \u00e0 deux m\u00e8tres d\u2019une baie ensoleill\u00e9e mais sans la br\u00fblure du soleil, les feuilles se d\u00e9velopp\u00e8rent \u00e0 la suite l\u2019une de l\u2019autre, de mars \u00e0 octobre, leur longueur avoisina bien vite un m\u00e8tre sur soixante centim\u00e8tres de large. Il \u00e9tait impossible de vouloir conclure quoi que ce soit sur le nombre de d\u00e9coupes et de perforations qui donnaient un aspect aussi attirant que monstrueux \u00e0 la plante, entre la disproportion des feuilles et celle de racines a\u00e9riennes d\u2019une longueur envahissante tandis que la tige d\u00e9gingand\u00e9e d\u00e9fiait l\u2019\u00e9quilibre de fa\u00e7on changeante \u00e0 chaque fois qu\u2019une \u00e9bauche foliaire se faisait jour au creux de la derni\u00e8re feuille en se d\u00e9veloppant progressivement avant de se d\u00e9rouler pour livrer ses perforations et la forme de plus en plus irr\u00e9guli\u00e8re que prenait chaque \u00e9norme feuille une fois que celle-ci s\u2019\u00e9tait tourn\u00e9e vers la lumi\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>Le plant de Pandanus panach\u00e9 m\u2019a renvoy\u00e9 \u00e0 cet exemplaire qui avait pouss\u00e9 de fa\u00e7on extravagante, une bouture pr\u00e9lev\u00e9e dans les serres pr\u00e8s du fleuve avait pu prosp\u00e9rer dans ce salon chauff\u00e9 au sol\u00a0et expos\u00e9 plein sud. Les conditions de sa croissance avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 restitu\u00e9es gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la clairvoyance involontaire des architectes. Et, plus r\u00e9cemment, un exemplaire de Monstera minor avait commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 se d\u00e9couper, \u00e0 se trouer tout en voulant prendre une forme arborescente. Ces alternances de vide et de plein, elles sont parfaites et al\u00e9atoires sur ces pieds de petites et de grandes dimensions.<\/p>\n<p>CARNETS, IMPRESSIONS ET D\u00c9COUPES<\/p>\n<p>Ces diff\u00e9rentes repr\u00e9sentations m\u2019ont confirm\u00e9 sur le pouvoir quasi magique de cette forme complexe, et, assez naturellement, il est devenu plus int\u00e9ressant, plus \u00e9vident de donner du mouvement \u00e0 cette plante qui alterne la ductilit\u00e9 d\u2019une liane avec la majest\u00e9 d\u00e9concertante des feuilles \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tat adulte. Toutes, cela dit, me semblent pr\u00e9senter le m\u00eame int\u00e9r\u00eat par la vari\u00e9t\u00e9 infinie des formes qui rappellent le signe du yin et du yang au sein d\u2019un cercle et d\u2019un hexagone ou fa\u00eete supr\u00eame. Cette forme primordiale d\u2019essence tao\u00efste se d\u00e9cline parfaitement en d\u00e9formations oscillant entre cercles et ellipses.<\/p>\n<p>Aux feuilles n\u00e9es sur la tige principale du sujet succ\u00e8dent des tiges secondaires apparaissant lorsque la plante a acquis assez de force, les dimensions des feuilles \u00e9voluent de m\u00eame que leur forme.<\/p>\n<p>Je venais de r\u00e9aliser le troisi\u00e8me volet d\u2019un triptyque compos\u00e9 de trois manuscrits d\u2019artiste, appellation \u00e0 laquelle je pr\u00e9f\u00e8re le terme de <em>manuscrit de cr\u00e9ation<\/em> pour sa d\u00e9finition plus large. Pour une trilogie rassembl\u00e9e sous le titre <em>Le temps est assassin<\/em>, diff\u00e9rents v\u00e9g\u00e9taux ont \u00e9t\u00e9 mis en \u00e9vidence\u00a0: un motif de chou chinois<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> (ill.16 &amp; 17), un motif d\u2019endive<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> puis un troisi\u00e8me, un peu diff\u00e9rent, qui fait p\u00e9n\u00e9trer dans les arcanes du monde min\u00e9ral et arch\u00e9ologique, un univers o\u00f9 les tessons, les d\u00e9bris, le rebut prennent des aspects aussi inattendus que les \u00e9l\u00e9ments constitutifs du monde v\u00e9g\u00e9tal. C\u2019est l\u00e0 qu\u2019est parti le 3<sup>e<\/sup> volet, <em>Des<\/em> b<em>ris de brocs<\/em><a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>; les trois carnets se sont succ\u00e9d\u00e9 assez r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement. Durant ce temps, j\u2019avais commenc\u00e9 de m\u2019int\u00e9resser \u00e0 la r\u00e9solution compl\u00e8te d\u2019une pi\u00e8ce autre. Il n\u2019emp\u00eache que la partie technique reste d\u00e9terminante pour la suite de ce que l\u2019on a en t\u00eate ou \u00e0 c\u0153ur d\u2019achever. Du papier qui a ses limites, sa l\u00e9g\u00e8ret\u00e9 mais conjointement, sa fragilit\u00e9, je me suis tourn\u00e9 vers les vari\u00e9t\u00e9s importantes de mat\u00e9riaux qui existent sur le march\u00e9, naturels ou composites, toutes sont vectrices de potentialit\u00e9s infinies. En parall\u00e8le aux essais sur papiers chinois ou tissus, l\u2019intiss\u00e9 m\u2019a sembl\u00e9 tout \u00e0 fait \u00e0 la hauteur de mes attentes. Il fait entrer en jeu la dur\u00e9e de vie de la pi\u00e8ce ainsi envisag\u00e9e, cr\u00e9\u00e9e selon qu\u2019elle sera un objet ou un accessoire pr\u00e9sent au quotidien \u00e0 forte utilisation et \u00e0 remplacement fr\u00e9quent, ou, qu\u2019\u00e0 contrario, elle va \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme un support de cr\u00e9ation propice \u00e0 des usages divers, jug\u00e9s parfois les plus modestes. Une deuxi\u00e8me livraison fera le point sur les prolongements de cette recherche.<\/p>\n<p>BRIBES CONCLUSIVES<\/p>\n<p>Un de mes mod\u00e8les favoris et en m\u00eame temps repoussoir, car, parfois, \u00e0 \u00e9viter, est v\u00e9ritablement Piero Fornasetti et ses successeurs. J\u2019y trouve ce m\u00eame go\u00fbt du spectaculaire, par la pr\u00e9sence d\u00e9rangeante, presque trop \u00e9toff\u00e9e, d\u2019une polychromie trop dense, des \u00e9l\u00e9ments de contenu signifiants ou plut\u00f4t d\u00e9coratifs en nombre tout autant d\u00e9raisonnable comme le sont aussi les r\u00e9f\u00e9rences et r\u00e9miniscences antiques, classiques ou populaires. Cela sombre parfois dans le disparate et dans une approche de design trop sch\u00e9matique. Cela manque de chaleur, car, \u00e0 dessein, Fornasetti veut, tout comme Alessi, une approche et un rendu efficaces qui tentent de faire p\u00e9n\u00e9trer dans le r\u00eave sans le vouloir vraiment. Ainsi, les voir fix\u00e9es sur un support transparent ou sur un tissu dans le m\u00eame but est \u00e9galement possible.<\/p>\n<p>Leur traitement sur des papiers devenus des couches de collages plus \u00e9pais, support sur lequel sont positionn\u00e9es les feuilles, emp\u00eache l\u2019acrylique de prendre un ton plus fig\u00e9, il reste des asp\u00e9rit\u00e9s autant dues aux diff\u00e9rences de textures du papier qu\u2019\u00e0 la fa\u00e7on de passer l\u2019acrylique soit au pinceau tamponn\u00e9 avec un mouchoir ou du plat d\u2019un doigt ou bien encore du plat de la main. A cela s\u2019ajoute la densit\u00e9 de peinture utilis\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>M\u00eame si ces motifs sont, comme tous les motifs couch\u00e9s sur le papier, ou, plus largement, comme tous les th\u00e8mes d\u2019\u0153uvres, rendus p\u00e9rennes, voire inexistants avec l\u2019usure du temps \u2013 pour ceux qui sont r\u00e9ussis \u2013 et ils le sont s\u2019ils remplissent certaines conditions, ils ont notamment su d\u00e9fier la lassitude du regard, y accrocher la m\u00e9moire, une m\u00e9moire qui pioche \u00e0 tous les souvenirs ayant essaim\u00e9 dans des coins du cerveau, en y laissant attach\u00e9e la douceur parfois \u00e2pre d\u2019un moment. Si donc, l\u2019universalit\u00e9 du propos est attach\u00e9e \u00e0 certaines images, son cr\u00e9ateur, &#8211; outre le plaisir personnel \u00e0 se consacrer \u00e0 une \u0153uvre \u2013 saura se sentir satisfait.<\/p>\n<p>J\u2019ai, au fil de ces parcours du regard sur une esp\u00e8ce de feuillage, revu, repris, modifi\u00e9, voulu autant m\u2019assumer \u00e0 manipuler ce qui aurait pu devenir un simple exercice, r\u00e9p\u00e9titif et sans v\u00e9ritable finalit\u00e9, alors que j\u2019ai d\u00fb r\u00e9p\u00e9ter cette capture d\u2019une forme initiale jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce qu\u2019elle me parvienne aller de soi, se lier avec d\u2019autres qui lui \u00e9taient li\u00e9es chromatiquement comme au niveau des formes. Plein-vide, alternance de tons chauds ou passe-partout, surtout s\u2019il s\u2019agit de plantes dont les parties a\u00e9riennes sont souvent susceptibles de changements de toutes sortes.<\/p>\n<p>Elles sont telles qu\u2019elles sont, ces feuilles, \u00e0 la fois plut\u00f4t pr\u00e9cises sans pour autant p\u00e9rir d\u2019une pr\u00e9cision botanique d\u00e9sormais inutile puisque le but de leur existence n\u2019est nullement p\u00e9dagogique mais bien li\u00e9 au plaisir de jouer avec leur pr\u00e9sence en nombre, en isolements divers sur des supports qui font l\u2019objet d\u2019adaptations techniques, voire chimiques, sans pour autant que cet aspect des choses \u00f4te \u00e0 la magie de leur \u00eatre ou \u00e0 l\u2019intensit\u00e9 de leur apparition. Sont-elles une \u0153uvre d\u2019art\u00a0? Un produit artisanal\u00a0? Un \u00e9l\u00e9ment autre de ce qui est devenu processus cr\u00e9atif\u00a0?
