Au fil de l\u2019histoire, de l\u2019histoire du go\u00fbt et celle des voyages, des histoires imaginaires aussi, de celles qui se r\u00e9pandent et deviennent des traces indicibles de ce qui, \u00e0 un moment ou \u00e0 un autre a frapp\u00e9 l\u2019attention.<\/p>\n<p>Toujours est-il que parmi ces p\u00e9riodes de sinomania, l\u2019une des derni\u00e8res correspond aux ann\u00e9es 30-40 du XXe si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019entre deux-guerres permet des emballements incontr\u00f4l\u00e9s pour une classe sociale d\u00e9sireuse d\u2019oublier les atrocit\u00e9s de la guerre et la grisaille de celles qui proviennent des pays voisins. C\u2019est \u00e9galement une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 les voyages en Chine sont tr\u00e8s pris\u00e9s\u00a0: m\u00e9decins en poster outre-mer, artistes d\u00e9sireux de parfaire leurs visions esth\u00e9tiques, esth\u00e8tes et collectionneurs allant traquer les pi\u00e8ces rares auxquelles une esth\u00e9tique nourrie des lieux et des lectures va donner une aura sans pareil.<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong, terre de transits voit s\u2019installer des habitants aussi divers que Luis Chan dont les paysages chinois sont facilement assimilables \u00e0 des chinoiseries en raison de leur simplification particuli\u00e8re. Le mim\u00e9tisme, l\u2019influence d\u2019hommes comme Picasso ont permis l\u2019\u00e9clat d\u2019une peinture m\u00e9tiss\u00e9e alliant un modernisme occidental \u00e0 des symboles africains et carib\u00e9ens.<\/p>\n<p><b>Naissance dans un environnement britannique<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Luis Chan (1905-1995), contemporain de Wifredo Lam, n\u2019a pas suivi la m\u00eame voie artistique\u00a0 ni la m\u00eame veine cr\u00e9atrice que son confr\u00e8re aur\u00e9ol\u00e9 d\u2019une renomm\u00e9e d\u00e9sormais cisel\u00e9e par les institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Lui aussi fruit de l\u2019exil, Luis Chan na\u00eet \u00e0 Panama en 1905. C\u2019est cependant en Chine, durant la derni\u00e8re p\u00e9riode de la dynastie mandchoue des Qing (1644-1911), que l\u2019enfant suit sa famille \u00e0 Hong Kong en 1910. La p\u00e9ninsule, situ\u00e9e sur la c\u00f4te sud, se prolonge par un chapelet d\u2019\u00eeles. Mais Hong Kong est alors territoire de la couronne britannique depuis 1842 par le trait\u00e9 de Nankin, un de ces trait\u00e9s dits in\u00e9gaux, impos\u00e9s \u00e0 la Chine par les puissances colonisatrices occidentales. Le trait\u00e9 met fin \u00e0 la premi\u00e8re guerre de l&rsquo;opium, qui s&rsquo;est termin\u00e9e en 1842 par une imposante victoire du Royaume-Uni, au c\u00f4t\u00e9 d&rsquo;autres puissances occidentales colonisatrices, sur l&rsquo;Empire chinois. Le trait\u00e9 permet aux Europ\u00e9ens de nouveaux d\u00e9bouch\u00e9s commerciaux\u00a0; sont notamment ouverts cinq nouveaux ports au commerce dont celui de Shanghai, de m\u00eame que cession est faite de l&rsquo;\u00eele de Hong Kong au Royaume-Uni. La Chine est aussi dans l&rsquo;obligation de verser des indemnit\u00e9s de 21 millions de dollars sur 4 ans, pour compenser les pertes dues \u00e0 la destruction de contingent de drogue en 1839.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019environnement hongkongais, de fait, m\u00e9tiss\u00e9, est un m\u00e9tissage bas\u00e9 sur des crit\u00e8res essentiellement li\u00e9s \u00e0 la domination. Quelles qu\u2019aient \u00e9t\u00e9 ses \u0153uvres produites, Luis Chan est, avant tout, un d\u00e9crypteur d\u2019espaces. Il acquiert une formation pouss\u00e9e dans le domaine des arts d\u2019une part gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019environnement familial qui lui donne les bases de sa connaissance artistique, notamment avec la pratique de la calligraphie et donc de l\u2019utilisation du lavis, tandis que sa curiosit\u00e9 fait le reste, et, comme pour tout autodidacte, m\u00e8ne \u00e0 une obsession cr\u00e9atrice.<\/p>\n<p><b>Une technique d\u2019excentrique<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Sa pratique de la calligraphie (ill.2b) permet, apr\u00e8s des gammes faites pour assurer la libert\u00e9 technique de l\u2019utilisation du pinceau sur les papiers mis \u00e0 sa disposition pour l\u2019entra\u00eenement, \u00e0 l\u2019aboutissement d\u2019un style propre (ill.2a). Un style \u00e9pais et plut\u00f4t g\u00e9om\u00e9trique qui rejoint les essais de cr\u00e9ateurs o\u00f9 des lettr\u00e9s comme Feng Zikai (1898-1975) publient dans des publications \u00e9dit\u00e9es dans les ann\u00e9es 1930de Hong Kong \u00e0 Shanghai. Jardin chinois du mus\u00e9e de l&rsquo;Homme (clich\u00e9 de l&rsquo;auteur, 2010).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>C\u2019est dix ans apr\u00e8s sa disparition, en 2005, que l\u2019histoire de l\u2019art a confi\u00e9 un relais plus concret, plus orient\u00e9, plus d\u00e9finitif aussi,\u00a0 vers un march\u00e9 de l\u2019art qui a rassembl\u00e9, lors de ventes tr\u00e8s organis\u00e9es, un floril\u00e8ge riche de pi\u00e8ces repr\u00e9sentatives de cet artiste.<\/p>\n<p>Parmi une forte production\u00a0 pour laquelle aucun catalogue n\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tabli \u00e0 ce jour, les paysages des ann\u00e9es 70, tr\u00e8s synth\u00e9tiques, sont, bien souvent, agr\u00e9ment\u00e9s d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ments qui \u00e9tonnent, tel ce papillon disproportionn\u00e9 sur une cr\u00eate montagneuse. Que l\u2019on ne s\u2019y trompe pas, comme nombre de ses contemporains, connus ou inconnus de lui, le propitiatoire se doit d\u2019\u00eatre pr\u00e9sent\u00a0: ici, le papillon est un souhait de long\u00e9vit\u00e9, celle qui permet de voir le seuil des 80 ans. Le souhait renvoie \u00e0 la culture chinoise et aux racines de Luis Chan.<\/p>\n<p>Sur d\u2019autres pi\u00e8ces, la polychromie rappelle celle d\u2019une des repr\u00e9sentantes du mouvement disparate des Etoiles, Li Shuang, qui sait, tr\u00e8s justement jouer de ces zones de polychromie intense.<\/p>\n<p>Si l\u2019on essaie de repasser discr\u00e8tement \u00e0 l\u2019Ouest, zone vaste et contradictoire qui, encore au XXIe si\u00e8cle, voit en la Chine un monde horrible et merveilleux, nous terminerons avec le jardin chinois du mus\u00e9e de l\u2019Homme (ill.7), sis sur la colline de Chaillot \u00e0 Paris. J\u2019ai, quasiment quotidiennement observ\u00e9 au fil de deux d\u00e9cennies, durant les saisons, comment ce microcosme \u00e9voluait.<\/p>\n<p>Je le voyais le plus souvent \u00e0 l\u2019aube naissante ou au cr\u00e9puscule, voire dans la nuit noire les soirs d\u2019hiver. L\u2019imaginaire des architectes dont j\u2019ai pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 ici oublier le nom, est assez rude et simplificateur. Une seule constante du paysage chinois a \u00e9t\u00e9 retenue\u00a0: la d\u00e9nivellation entre plan d\u2019eau et hauteur. Le jardin est n\u00e9 du remblaiement de terre qui a servi \u00e0 cr\u00e9er une profondeur et une th\u00e9\u00e2tralit\u00e9 autour du mus\u00e9e, la hauteur est donn\u00e9e avec le pont qui surplombe le lieu, un pont en b\u00e9ton comme il s\u2019en est construit de nombreux dans les jardins publics des en ces ann\u00e9es d\u2019un XXe si\u00e8cle qui red\u00e9couvre une esth\u00e9tique autre de la ville, et, en particulier en cette ann\u00e9e 1937, date de la construction du mus\u00e9e,\u00a0 pour l\u2019exposition universelle.<\/p>\n<p>A la lourdeur de la simplification du paysage chinois par un cr\u00e9ateur occidental, celle dont Luis Chan pare ses paysages reste plus une \u00e9vocation de lettr\u00e9 qui revit une atmosph\u00e8re autre, de ce qui pourrait \u00eatre, celle aussi qui laisse \u00e0 la peinture chinoise de paysage\u00a0 son approche m\u00e9morielle et optimiste.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes bibliographiques<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Christophe Comentale, <i>Cent ans d\u2019art chinois, 1920-2020<\/i>.\u00a0Paris\u00a0: Ed. de la diff\u00e9rence, 2020. 546 p.\u00a0: ill.
